Start Wearing Purple
Gogol Bordello Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Start wearing purple wearing purple
Start wearing purple, for me now
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish
I promise, it's just a matter of time

So yeah start wearing purple wearing purple
Start wearing purple, for me now
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish
I promise, it's just a matter of time

I know you since you were a twenty and I was twenty
But thought that some years from now
A purple little little lady will be perfect
For dirty old and useless clown

So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!

I know it all from Diogenis to Foucault
From Lozgechkin to Paspartu
I ja kljanus obostzav dva paltza
Schto muzika poshla ot Zvukov Mu!

Start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!

So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
So why don't you start wearing purple?
Why don't you start wearing purple
Start wearing purple for me now!

All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!

So Fio-Fio-Fioletta! Etta! Va-va-va-vaja dama ti moja!
Eh podayte name karetu, votetu, I mi poedem k ebenjam!
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!

Overall Meaning

Gogol Bordello’s “Start Wearing Purple” is a song that appears to be about encouraging someone to embrace chaos and unpredictability in their life. The repeated chorus, “Start wearing purple, wearing purple, start wearing purple for me now,” is a playful invitation to abandon the humdrum of day-to-day life and embrace something more exciting. The singer promises that “All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish, I promise, it’s just a matter of time,” suggesting that the pursuit of madness and folly is worthwhile because it brings color and life to an otherwise dull existence.

The second verse adds a layer of nostalgia as the singer remembers knowing the object of their affection back when they were both young and promising. The chorus takes on a new meaning here as the singer urges the object of their affections to wear purple not just for their own benefit, but for the singer’s as well. The final lines of the verse: “For dirty old and useless clown,” add an interesting layer to the song, suggesting that the singer may not have the best intentions for the person they’re addressing.

The verse that follows is a whirlwind of cultural references, from ancient Greek philosophers Diogenes to modern-day post-structuralist Michel Foucault. The line, “I ja kljanus obostzav dva paltza, Schto muzika poshla ot Zvukov Mu!” is Russian for “And I cross my fingers and hold up two fingers, That music started with the sounds of Mu!” This reference to Russian mysticism and the origins of sound could be interpreted as a nod to the band’s own eclectic musical influences. Overall, “Start Wearing Purple” is a cheeky, irreverent call to embrace chaos and live life to the fullest.

"It's one of the very few songs I wrote for a girl. I just moved in with my girlfriend in New York. We had a neighbour: an old woman who was always dressed in purple head to toe. She was clearly bonkers. So whenever my girlfriend and I had an argument and she would start screaming at me, I would say: you might as well start wearing purple now." -Gogol Bordello

Thank you! My daughter just asked what this song means, so I started looking, and see your explanation. Now we know!!!

@djscrews

Been listening to this song for years and had no idea what the point was, but I love it. That is absolutely hilarious, and defintely something I would do/say! Love it, man!

@rome8180

@@juliaistominaoden5801 I always took it as "Embrace insanity for me." or "Let's be crazy together." "Purple" is also used to describe writing that's over the top and florid. So I look at it as symbolizing insanity and self-indulgence. I think it's the idea of letting loose and being yourself in a relationship.
