Who Needs You
The Four Lads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who needs you to drive me out of my mind
Who needs you, I'd like to know
Who needs you to give me chills when I'm well
How fast can a helpless heart go
I know dear I love you more than a lot
But oh what I got to go through
And so dear I guess the answer is simply
Who needs you, I do

Each time we kiss goodnight
I find that I get so excited
I can't sleep all night
I've lost my appetite
No appetite no sleep at night

Who needs you, I'd like to know
How fast can a helpless heart go
I know dear I love you more than a lot
But oh what I got to go through

And so dear I guess the answer is simply
Who needs you, who needs you, I do

Overall Meaning

The Four Lads's song "Who Needs You" is a classic tune that explores the intensity of love and how it can make one feel both exhilarated and irritable at different moments. At first, the lyrics seem to question the necessity of the person who is bringing these extreme emotions to the singer's life - "Who needs you to drive me out of my mind / Who needs you, I'd like to know" - but soon the song transitions into a declaration of love and need - "Who needs you, who needs you, I do." It's apparent that while the singer can recognize that their lover is causing them distress and stress, the pull of their beloved's presence is too strong to resist.

The lyrics go on to describe the physical effects of this overwhelming love - how it makes the singer lose their appetite and their ability to sleep soundly. The lyrics suggest that love is a force that can be as all-consuming as it is rewarding, and that it might not always be an entirely pleasant experience. The repetition of the title phrase "Who needs you" throughout the song reinforces the idea that love can be powerful and confusing, and that it may be hard to fully articulate the depth of one's feelings.

Overall, "Who Needs You" is a catchy and enjoyable song that captures the ups and downs of falling in love. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of classic pop music and a reminder that while the language and style of music may have changed over time, the core emotions it evokes remain universal.

Their glorious voices touched the world!
[A shout-out to Al
Stillman and Robert Allen for writing this gem!]
I was only 12 years old when this was a big #9 hit in 1957, and I listened to music on the radio constantly, but somehow, unfortunately, this gem eluded me. So happy to have lived long enough to have discovered it on you tube a year or two ago. I just turned 75 today. IT'S GOOD TO BE ALIVE AND IN GOOD HEALTH!đŸ˜ș

I don't remember this song but I remember ''Moments To Remember from The Four Lads.
My 1958 favourite group was The Four Preps ''Big Man''
other songs I remember were popular I think about that time on the wireless were ''It's Almost Tomorrow'' The Dream weavers , and Freddie And The Dreamers ''I Understand ''
I know you like the latter as I requested Marcus to play it last new years eve and you gave it a very good comment.

@lerebs

In 1957 I was a lonely sailor along way from home and when I would hear this song I was reminded of my lost love in high school.

There was a little bit of magic the way the music blended so well with the story in the song. Rhythm , flow, timing, and great harmony, these songs are priceless.
