Bring It On
The Gaslight Anthem (USA) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My queen of the Bronx
Blue eyes and spitfire
I saw you walking back and forth about another boy
Thinking that you may want to leave

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love, then bring it on

And take it back out to the streets where you know you used to be
For the Romeos uptown, if I bring you down
And you're tired of those vows
And you're really walking out

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love, baby, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your palms
Is he better than my love? (better than my love?)
Is he better than my love? (better than my love?)

So I found the letters with the reasons to things
You've been feeling that he says they'll never know
And you say the night just got too cold

Well, everybody's cold
Who's gonna keep my baby warm
When everybody goes?

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love

Well, then wait a minute, wait a minute
(Wasn't I good to you?)
Wait a minute, wait a minute
(Wasn't I good to you?)
Wait a minute, wait a minute
(You don't know what's good for you)

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the Cool, he sings to you in those songs
You've been my baby for so long, come on, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your palms

If he's better than my love
If he's better than my love, then go on, take it all

Overall Meaning

The Gaslight Anthem’s “Bring It On” is a song about a man pleading with his girlfriend not to leave him for another guy. The chorus says “give me the fevers that just won't break, and give me the children you don't want to raise, and tell me about the Cool he sings to you in those songs, if it's better than my love, then bring it on.” What he means is that he wants her to stay with him and give him all of the problems and complications that come with any relationship. He’s asking her to stay with him even if she doesn’t want to.

The verses go on to tell a story of a woman who is walking back and forth about another boy and thinking of leaving. She’s reading letters with the reason to things she’s been feeling, and the man singing wonders if this new boy is better than him. Then in the second verse, he finds a way to accuse her of being unable to determine what she wants, and he insists that he’s been good to her.

The bridge of the song reveals the desperation on the man’s part. He says “You’ve been my baby for so long, come on bring it on.” It’s clear he’s fearful of being alone, and he values the relationship more than his pride.

Overall, it’s a song about a man who is insecure, terrified of being alone, and willing to take all the challenges that come with being in a relationship. He’s not saying that he’ll be better than anyone else, but he’s saying that he’ll be there to work things out no matter what.

You know, I do 100% agree that bands like this need so much more recognition. But, at the same time, I sort of enjoy listening to bands that not everyone knows about or is super popular. I think bands really change when they get to that stage, not every one... But it does happen. The Gaslight Anthem has really helped me through tough decisions in life and simply making music that is more than enjoyable and nothing but raw talent. Brian is a real musician, he loves what he does...
