Run Run Run
The Gestures Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now run run baby
Run run run to set you free
Run run run run baby
Run run run run baby run
I'll just set you free

Now did you know
That I didn't love you
And did you know
I'd make a fool of you

Run run run run baby
Run run run run baby run

There I was all alone
Waiting for you to phone
But you were out with another guy
Why oh why oh why

Run run baby
Run run run to set you free
Run run run run baby
Run run run run baby run
I'll just set you free

There I was all alone
Waiting for you to phone
But you were out with another guy
Why oh why oh why

Come on and run run baby
Run run run to set you free
Run run run run baby

Run run run run baby
Run run run run baby run

Overall Meaning

The Gestures's song "Run Run Run" appears to be about a failed relationship. The lyrics encourage a woman to run away from a man who has hurt her, as he did not love her and made a fool out of her. The repeated phrase "run run run" suggests urgency, possibly to escape any further emotional pain. The singer acknowledges that he cannot be the one to set her free, but encourages her to leave so that she can find her own freedom.

The song's repetitive lyrics and simple instrumentation suggest a sense of urgency and desperation. The upbeat melody and rhythm of the song contrast with its somber lyrics, creating a bittersweet tone. The repeated phrases "run run run" and "why oh why" convey a sense of frustration and confusion about the failed relationship.

Overall, "Run Run Run" is a poignant, yet catchy reminder of the complexities of relationships and the importance of self-preservation.

Still slip this into my current playlists. Way ahead of its time and still sounds relevant today,
as where Beatles tunes from the era are great, but seem to be dated, Hard to believe this sound came from from Mankato, MN in 1964. I would have guessed another universe.
Absolute perfection......

@2009framat

This sounds very dated unlike the classic Beatles tunes. Very average and very far from "perfection". Run of the mill beat music made in USA and never ever way ahead of its time. Only for fans.

@sulmen2001

So proud of what you Mankato guys did.

@mtntime1

You've gotta love it. Surf music that has nothing to do with surfing. It's a "feeling". And they captured that
feeling better than anybody, in my book. I hear this, and it's 1964 again, I'm in a GTO with the top down. Ahhhhh...

@concatinate

The record that out-Beatled the Beatles (and created a fascinating synthesis of surf-rock/beat music/hard pop, into the bargain).

@shako4907

Sounds like the Knickerbockers don't it

@markw9285

Also 'Beat Generation'.

@maxromero2903

Love this song when it came out. I was in the 8th grade. Always reminds me of my friends twin sister.

@mtntime1

I love this music! But what do you call it? Garage rock? Surf-ey rock? The forerunner of what would later be called punk?
Yeah, all those things. I'd just call it awesome. I've got to hear it again.
