And then it lets you down, keeps you hanging on
She's playing with my mind, there ain't nothing left to find
'Cause my judgment and my senses have all but gone
You can't tell me she ain't worth it all, 'cause she surely is
She gives with every, every little breath of her beck and call
She's chocolate in my pocket, she's gum in my hair
But I don't really care
She's a superstar on my stage, she's the sunlight in my shades
The sweetest scent that fills the air
You will always find her there
Like a cricket in a web, I never watched my step
As I walked into her black widowed tentacled charm
She's working on my senses, got me lowering my defences
There ain't nothing I can do to keep me safe from harm
You can't tell me she ain't worth it all, 'cause she surely is
I live for every, every little breath of her beck and call
She's chocolate in my pocket...
[Repeat]
The song "Chocolate" by The Getaway People is a playful and honest expression of the all-consuming obsession that can come with being infatuated with someone. The lyrics compare the object of affection to different things, such as a bittersweet pill, gum in hair, and a cricket caught in a web. These comparisons acknowledge the ups and downs of being with this person but also express that the thrill of being with them is worth it all. The line "She gives with every, every little breath of her beck and call" emphasizes the power dynamic in the relationship and suggests that the singer is under the spell of this person's charm.
The lyrics also acknowledge the potential danger and risk involved in being with this person, as the second verse compares the relationship to being caught in a black widowed tentacled charm. However, the singer still cannot resist their pull and is willing to lower their defenses to be with them. The line "I live for every, every little breath of her beck and call" repeats the power dynamic established earlier and suggests that the singer is willing to do anything for their lover.
