They formed in 1994 releasing their self-titled debut album, The Getaway People, in the US in 1998. This was followed by a long US tour that influenced their second album, Turnpike Diaries, both lyrically and musically.
The band split up in 2002, canceling their deal with Columbia Records. The lead singer, Ottestad, has since released a solo album, Ottestad, which was somewhat successful in Norway.

Kick back and relax for a little while
We'll all still be here tomorrow
Take time just to act like a little child
No matter what the world has in store for us
You got the ring that better get off of us
Reach out for a comfortable chair
Rejoice and throw your arms in the air
'Cause it's a good life so why you trippin'
The good life slippin' away
If you're boss is giving you pressure
Let go, take a breather in the park
You've got to find out what's your pleasure
In time you'll be singing like a lark
Pretty soon your sorry will chime for all
Somebody will heed your call
Leave all your troubles and pain
And rise like Phoenix from the flame
'Cause it's a good life so why you trippin'
The good life slippin' away
Reach out for a comfortable chair
Rejoice and throw your arms in the air
Now the gospel according to Boots is
If you're gonna have a life, you might as well have a good one
'Cause it's a good life so why you trippin'
The good life slippin' away
The Getaway People's song "Good Life" is an uplifting track that encourages listeners to take a break and appreciate the positive things in life. The first verse urges the listener to relax and take a breather, reminding them that tomorrow is another day. The lyrics suggest that we should indulge in childlike behaviors and not worry about the world's problems. The chorus features the repetition of "good life" while questioning why anyone would trip with such an excellent existence to enjoy.
The second verse guides the listener away from the perceived pressures in life that are causing them stress. Whether it's work, relationships, or other demands, the song advises people to step back and find pleasure in their pursuit. The lyrics go on to suggest that everyone's life will have obligations and times when they feel down, but holding your head high and rising like the Phoenix from the flame is what makes life good overall.
The spoken word interlude before the final chorus offers the listener words of wisdom, with Boots preaching that if you're going to have a life, you might as well have a good one. The song then repeats the chorus once again, bringing the message home. Overall, "Good Life" encourages us to take a break, appreciate the world around us, and enjoy every moment.
