Lemonade
The Gills Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He tells lies and she don't sleep, trying to get it right, trying to get it right
I said something that he doesn't like, tried to get a bite, just to get a bite

I say lemonade are you alright, you wanna come rot my teeth tonight?
Looking for your friend 'cause you think it's the end of something beautiful
You're never gonna see him again

Don't make me do it to you
Don't make me burn it to the ground

Ju Ju cocaine, sipping on the crack pipe, killing the pain
It's the cool kids living it up
It's the cool kids' piss in the cup

I say lemonade you don't know, some go high, some go low
You know I can not explain what they did to my brain
Don't know why I did it but I did it again

Don't make me do it to you
Don't make me burn it to the ground, ground

I say lemonade are you alright, you wanna come rot my teeth tonight?
Looking for your friend 'cause you think it's the end of something beautiful
You're never gonna see him again

Don't make me do it to you
Don't make me burn it to the

Don't make me burn it to the
Don't make me burn it to the ground, ground

Overall Meaning

The Gills's song Lemonade discusses themes of addiction, drug use, and self-destructive behavior. The opening lines set the tone for a dysfunctional relationship, with the man lying and the woman unable to sleep. Despite this, they are both trying to make things work, trying to get it right. The singer, however, does not seem to be in the best of states either, having said something that the man did not like and trying to get a reaction out of him. The chorus incorporates the imagery of lemonade as a tempting, but ultimately harmful substance. The singer seems to be offering it to someone, asking if they want to "come rot my teeth tonight." This plays with the idea of indulging in something that may feel good in the moment but will ultimately have negative consequences.

The second verse goes deeper into the themes of addiction, with references to cocaine and crack pipes. The singer describes those who use these drugs as the "cool kids," even though the reality of their behavior is self-destructive. The line "it's the cool kids' piss in the cup" is a vivid depiction of the lengths people will go to in order to avoid getting caught by the law. The repetition of "don't make me do it to you" in the chorus could be interpreted in different ways. It may be a warning to someone else not to succumb to self-destructive behavior or a plea to oneself not to give in to temptation.

Overall, Lemonade is a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and self-destructive behavior. It is a reminder that even when things seem tempting, they may have severe consequences.
