Dreamland
The Glass Animals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist
Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist

That first friend you had, that worst thing you said
That perfect moment, that last tear you shed
All you done in bed? All on Memorex
All 'round, 'round your head, all 'round, 'round your head

Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist
Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist

You've had too much of the digital love
You want everything live, you want things you can touch
Make it feel like like a movie you saw in your youth
Make it feel like that song that just unopened you
You were ten years old holding hands in the classroom
He had a gun on the first day of high school
You want something bizarre, old conceptual cars
You want girls dressed in drag, you want boys with guitars

Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist
Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head
Slipping through dreamland like a tourist

You see Kodachrome, you see pink and gold
You see Mullholland glow, you see in airplane mode
All 'round, 'round your head, all 'round, 'round your head
All 'round, 'round your head, all 'round 'round your head

You float in the pool where the soundtrack is canned
You go ask your questions like, "What makes a man?"

Oh, it's 2020 so it's time to change that
So you go make an album and call it Dreamland

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Dreamland" by The Glass Animals speak to the concept of escapism and the desire for a more tangible and immersive experience in a digitally saturated world.

The opening lines, "Pulling down backstreets, deep in your head / Slipping through dreamland like a tourist," suggest a journey through one's own thoughts and dreams, akin to exploring unfamiliar streets as a traveler. The repetition of these lines emphasizes the desire to disconnect from reality and indulge in a personal dreamlike state.

The following lines, "That first friend you had, that worst thing you said / That perfect moment, that last tear you shed," speak to the nostalgic and emotional aspects of dreaming. Memories and experiences are intertwined within the dreamland, allowing for reflection and introspection. The reference to "Memorex," a brand of cassette tapes used for recording, suggests that these memories are replayed in one's mind.

The lyrics also touch on the longing for genuine human experiences in a world consumed by technology. "You've had too much of the digital love / You want everything live, you want things you can touch" expresses a desire for tangible connections and experiences. The references to childhood memories, like holding hands in the classroom, evoke a yearning for simpler and more authentic moments.

The lyrics further delve into a desire for the unconventional and exciting. "You want something bizarre, old conceptual cars / You want girls dressed in drag, you want boys with guitars" conveys a longing for unique and outside-the-norm experiences. This can be seen as a rejection of the mundane and mundane experiences often found in the mainstream.

There is a juxtaposition between the digital world and the dreamland throughout the lyrics. The reference to "Kodachrome," a type of film, and the pink and gold hues evoke nostalgia for a bygone era, while "airplane mode" and the mention of making an album in 2020 highlight the present moment.

Overall, "Dreamland" explores the desire to escape reality, reconnect with tangible experiences, and find excitement and authenticity in a world increasingly dominated by technology. It encourages the listener to seek personal connections, challenge societal norms, and embrace the power of imagination.

Dave

I doubt you will see this. I'm a paramedic that has went through a terrible separation during my training. I find myself in a deep rock bottom hole more often than not, and contemplate things that I probably shouldn't plaster on the internet. But your song "Your Love (Deja Vu)" has really helped me realise that my thoughts of love and what I thought was permanent isn't always the right thing. You've helped me realise that life goes on, even with all the pain. I'm around pain quite a bit every day, yet I couldn't realise my own internal pain until I observed your art.

From one musician to another, thank you.

Have a wonderful and fulfilling life.

(ps. My daughters are also obsessed with your music. My 2 year old won't go to sleep without your zaba album playing)

@JupiterSun-888

There’s something unnerving about the chorus, that grabs me- it sounds screwy- it sounds slightly distorted & uneasy. & I love how it does.

It especially sounds more distorted the second time it hits- more distanced, more echoed-

Almost as though you heard someone calling your name just as you are waking up

Was the sound you heard real or imagined?

This is how I feel about the production of
The chorus & its echoings

It does feel like a warped dreamland 👌✨🙏
