Vacation

Back here at home there's nothin' to do
Now that I'm away
I wish I'd stayed
Tomorrow's a day of mine that you won't be in
When you looked at me I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along that time would tell
A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
The song "Vacation" by The Go-Go's which was released in 1982, explores a longing for escape, particularly for the need to forget someone who seems to be inescapable. The lyrics are sung by a narrator who has gone on vacation to forget someone they love, but who they know will still be occupying their thoughts. The singer claims that the vacation is all they ever wanted and that they needed to get away. It is evident that the separation from the person they love is not easy, even when they are not physically there: "Now that I'm away, I wish I'd stayed. Tomorrow's a day of mine that you won't be in."
The lyrics suggest that the singer has some regrets about their past relationship, wondering if they should have seen the signs that it would end in heartbreak. They sing, "When you looked at me, I should've run. But I thought it was just for fun. I see I was wrong, and I'm not so strong. I should've known all along that time would tell." These lyrics emphasize the idea that hindsight is always 20/20, and that it's very easy to misread situations when we are in them.
Interestingly, the song suggests that the vacation will be spent alone, as if the singer knows that they will not be able to forget their former lover, despite the distance. The lyrics, "Vacation, meant to be spent alone" seem to suggest that the singer will use the time to introspect and come to terms with their emotions.
Overall, "Vacation" explores the idea of escape, but it acknowledges that it is not always easy to forget the people and circumstances we are trying to leave behind.
