1) The Godz were a NYC-based garage rock band that existed from 1966 to 1973. Their style varied from early noise rock to avant-garde and psychedelic rock.

The Godz were part of the Lower East Side, Manhattan scene that produced Allen Ginsberg, the Fugs and the Holy Modal Rounders. Consisting of guitarist Jim McCarthy, bassist Larry Kessler, autoharpist Jay Dillon, and drummer Paul Thornton.

Working on the ESP-Disk label, the first recording, 1966's Contact High With The Godz, was an attempt to rise above the limitations and accepted norm for popular music at the time. 1967 produced Godz 2, a bolder, more adventurous soundscape which is, in some people's opinion, the group's masterpiece. The Third Testament, in 1968, saw the quartet become a trio. In 1973, a fourth and last group LP Godzundheit was recorded.

Rock Critic Lester Bangs in a 1971 issue of Cream magazine referred to the Godz as "...a pure test of one of the supreme traditions of rock & roll: the process by which a musical band can evolve from beginnings of almost insulting illiteracy to wind up several albums later romping and stomping deft as champs."

By 1973 the Godz had split up, with McCarthy going on to pursue a solo career, eventually settling as a photographer. Kessler became a record dealer, Thornton an actor, and Dillon moved to the wilds of New Jersey.

Unfortunately, in July 2005, Jay Dillon's niece posted a message on the Hummingbird Mountain website, explaining that a showing of his art was to take place and that he had passed on several years before. The news of Jay's death reconnected the rest of the members in 2006, leading to the discussion of possibly collaborating again.

2) The Godz were an obscure hard rock/arena rock outfit of the late '70s and '80s. This band was formed in the Midwest in 1976, when bassist/producer Eric Moore got together with lead guitarist Mark Chatfield, rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Bob Hill, and drummer Glen Cataline. All four of them contributed lead vocals. The Godz signed with Casablanca in 1977, which was also the year in which they had an opening spot on Kiss' Love Gun Tour. (Cheap Trick was the other opening act on that tour.) On their selftitled album are at least two tracks you might want to listen to: "Gotta Keep A Runnin'" and "Candy's Going Bad", which is a cover of Golden Earring. It originally appeared on their 1973's Moontan album.

I just turned 60. Ive heard a million songs, but if i was asked to pick 1 song that defined my teen years and i still love to this day, its this one. At 15, when this came out it was the coolest song ever. And guess what? It still is. Being in cleveland ive seen them alot . In columbus and here in cleveland. I miss ya, Eric. RIP! Being from central Ohio, I've jammed with the Godz for many years. Was actually my first concert, so many years ago. Then they came to the old Alrosà in Columbus. Had to go! I met these guys in a guitar store. They sat down were i was playing and starting playing Get away and i was blown away and asked them if they were in a band. They laughed and said we're the Godz we open for Blue oaster cult tonight at the arena.Great guys hell of a band. I will never forget that concert. THEY WERE GODZ.

The Godz used to rehearse half a block away from my house as a kid, in an old Lawson's dairy store on 422 in Girard Ohio! The GODZ, Left End, and Micheal Stanley Band. Ohio's rock legends!!! When I moved to Florida, I went to a Camelot records and tapes, and found this cassette! Bought because my vynyl was still in Ohio in storage. Still have both today!!! Years later, a friend of mine called me and said dude, you gotta hear this cd I just got! He came by and played the disc, and on the first note, I was like seriously?!! I pulled out my album and cassette to show him. Told him the story, and about shit brcause my album was signed by the whole band!!!

That was kicking! I haven't listened to this since around 1979. I couldn't keep my ass still in the chair or keep my head from rocking. The lyrics made me laugh my ass off! My poor landlord was around 75 yrs old when I pumped this out in 1978, through (4) Advent Loudspeakers upstairs of an old house that reverberated every note.

There needs to be karaoke versions of these classics! My garage bands played covers back in the day, but I left my last band almost 20 years ago. I can still sing, to an extent, but my shredding days ended with 'trigger thumbs' from work injuries since then.

Saw them in Pittsburgh's Stanley Theater on the mid 1970's, with the group "Angel" . . the singer had this big pole switch, like a giant gear shift, and right after the monolog lyrics in this song, the singer would "shift into a higher gear" . . Godz are Rock-n-Roll Machines.

I used to buy CREEM magazine from a newsagent in London back in the day, 1978. Read this article about this band called the Godz, bought their debut on import and never looked back. To this day still rockin' out to The Godz, one hell of an album!

A good friend and I really listened to this a lot (late 70s or early 80s). We once played it to another guy, and when it got to the part "The Godz are rock and roll machines" at 4:55, he said "This is stupid". We laughed our asses off! It's so funny when people just don't get it.

I seen the godz with my uncle at a small bar the roadies had all their equipment set up everyone was waiting on the godz to take the stage when we all heard the thunderous sound of a fleet of Harley’s they rode to the bar and walked through the front doors to thunderous applause they took the stage like true rock godz and brought the place to the ground it was a experience I will never ever in my life forget They killed it I swear everyone was in a glorious uproar of rock and roll tearing up the stage not a single person was still it was momentous and a great part of rock history and these guys were so underrated

I saw Mark Chatfield with his first gig. 6th grade talent show at Kingston Avenue Elementary School with Greg Rogers and Mark playing guitar hooked to one Amp and Earnie Coachman playing drums lol who would have thought he would go so far with his music career. Just saw Mark at the LC Pavillion on 9/19/2014 with Rosie and he still rocks the house. Have known him all my life and proud of it!!

They use to play my buddy's 4th of July party every year. Played the bars in Zanesville in the 70's and 80's. Eric Moore would get kicked out for taking off his clothes.

@Troy Gornall saw them at Secrets Auditorium and he actually ate a double M Lemmon 714 on the stage. We was passing joints and a bottle of Jack back an forth. But, yes he sung feelung fine on a 714 right after eating it. Oh man, good time, great memories.

We put a stolden stereo in my '64 dart and the speakers were crosswired onnacounta we was ukfupped, so the bass track was all in the back seat and the vocals kinda echoed up under the dash. It came with a cassette stuck in the deck that had GODZ on one side and Triumph on the other. Gallon of gas or quart of beer were 69 cents, McDonalds paid $1.85/hr. Life was good....

My buddy in Urbana,IL. who is a couple years older than me turned me onto weed, obscure metal and punk. As Marc Maron says-you need a guy like that. For many it's an older brother which I didn't have. Remember first time listening to this at about 15 years old after smoking some real Colombian gold. Blew my mind...pretty cheesy now but still rocks. Had no idea they were from Columbus at the time. I lived there till I was 12 before moving to Illinois. Definitely remember listening to qfm96.

My very first concert was The Godz in Marion, Ohio. Seen them since, here in Columbus Ohio, at the Alrosa on Brice Road. They didn't go on stage until about midnight. But they hung out and partied with everyone. It was so cool!!! I've gotta admit, I'm a huge AC/DC fan, but I think "Gotta keep a runnin" is my all time favorite song. Godz rock!!!!!!!

The Gods used to play Temple Tavern bar in Akron Ohio on main street and also Ramones in Akron Ohio! One of the best bands I’ve ever heard in my entire life! Also Temple tavern change their name to Ron’s CrossRoads Tavern. A band called US metal used to play there they were awesome and underrated also, Michael Stanley band were awesome the Gods were awesome! Shok Paris another great band from Cleveland Ohio! Legendary classic hard rock heavy metal from back in the day! Man those are kicking times!!!
