The Golden Oldies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On.

Sloopy Lives In
A very bad part of Town
And Everybody, Yeah,
Tries To Put My Sloopy Down
Sloopy I Don't Care
What Your Daddy Do
Cause You Know Sloopy Girl
I'm in Love with You
And So I Say Now...

Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On.

Sloopy wears a red dress, Yeh,
As long legs appear,
But when Sloopy
Wears that red dress, Yeh,
You know it gives Me the chills
Sloopy when I see You walking,
Walking Down The Street
I say don't worry Sloopy Girl,
You Belong To Me
And So I Say Now...

Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On.

(MUSIC)

Sloopy Let Your Hair Down, Girl,
Let It Hang Down On Me
Sloopy Let Your Hair Down, Girl,
Let It Hang Down On Me.

Come On Sloopy,
Come On, Come On
Oh Come On Sloopy.
Come On, Come On
Oh Come On Sloopy.
Come On, Come On
Oh Come On Sloopy.
Come On, Come On.

Well it feels so good,
Come On, Come On
You know it feels so good,
Come On, Come On.

Well Shake It, Shake It, Shake It Sloopy
Come On, Come On.
Well Shake It, Shake It, Shake It Yeah
Come On, Come On.
Yeah...

Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On.

Yeah...
Hang On Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On.

Overall Meaning

“Hang On Sloopy” is a fun-loving love song, initially performed by a band named The Vibrations in 1964, and later covered by The McCoys in the same year. This song is an ode to Sloopy, who lives in a “very bad part of town” but is loved by the singer despite the criticism and naysaying of others. In the initial stanza, The Golden Oldies lead with “Sloopy lives in a very bad part of town, and everybody, yeah, tries to put my Sloopy down.” However, the singer reassures Sloopy that he doesn't care what her father does, and she knows that he is in love with her. Therefore, he advises Sloopy to “hang on” as he knows they will ultimately make it.

In the second section of the song, the singer admires Sloopy’s physical appearance, particularly when she wears her long red dress. We can also deduce that Sloopy might be a prostitute because of a line in this section where he says, "when Sloopy wears that red dress, yeah, you know it gives me the chills." The stanza explains how other men desire Sloopy, but the songwriter is persistent in his love for Sloopy: “Sloopy when I see you walking, walking down the street, I say don't worry, Sloopy girl, You belong to me. And so I say now...”

The chorus repeats “hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on” several times, underscoring the message of the song. It is a reminder to Sloopy to stay strong despite the adversity she may face. Overall, the lyrics present a protective, loving, and affectionate perspective towards Sloopy.
