Celebration
The Gym All-Stars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And so tomorrow there will be another number
For the one who had a name
Desert wind and a perverse desire to win
History buried in shame

All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember
All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember

And then the next day, how will you know your enemy?
By their color or your fear?
One by one you can cage them in your freedom
Make them all disappear

Six hundred sixty-six hundred sixty days
Two guards for one uncharged
This morning's paper's ink stains my fingers
My hands grow darker everyday

All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember
All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember

All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember
All the beating drums
Celebration guns
The thunder and the laughter
The last thing they remember

Goodnight, sleep light, stranger

Goodnight, sleep light, stranger
Goodnight, sleep light, stranger

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Gym All-Stars' song "Celebration" depict themes of power, oppression, and the manipulation of fear.

The opening lines, "And so tomorrow there will be another number / For the one who had a name / Desert wind and a perverse desire to win / History buried in shame," suggest that there is a cycle of oppression and dehumanization, with individuals being reduced to mere numbers and their identities erased. The reference to a "perverse desire to win" indicates that those in power are driven by a corrupt need for dominance.

The lines "All the beating drums / Celebration guns / The thunder and the laughter / The last thing they remember" suggest a scene of revelry and celebration, but with a sinister undertone. The phrase "the last thing they remember" hints at a looming tragedy or a violent outcome. It could represent the victims being forced to participate in the celebration against their will, only to meet a grim fate.

The following lines shift the focus to the aftermath of the celebration, raising questions about the nature of enmity and fear. "And then the next day, how will you know your enemy? / By their color or your fear?" challenges the notion of categorizing people based on external factors such as skin color, emphasizing that true enemies are not defined solely by appearances. The lyrics suggest that fear plays a significant role in perpetuating animosity and division.

The subsequent lines, "One by one you can cage them in your freedom / Make them all disappear," highlight the oppressive tactics used by those in power to manipulate and control others. The repetition of "beating drums / Celebration guns / The thunder and the laughter" implies the continued use of force and intimidation to maintain this power dynamic.

The final repetition of "Goodnight, sleep light, stranger" adds a haunting conclusion to the song. It could be interpreted as a farewell or a warning to the oppressed, acknowledging their suffering while also offering a glimmer of hope or solace.

In summary, the lyrics of "Celebration" by The Gym All-Stars delve into themes of power, oppression, and the impact of fear on society. It portrays the dehumanization of individuals, the manipulation of celebrations for sinister purposes, and the perpetuation of enemies based on fear. The song ultimately leaves the listener with a sense of unease, suggesting that there may be no escape from the cycles of power and oppression.
