National fencer Monteith and orchestra nerd Langman didn't exactly get along in high school. However, a chance conversation about the success of Youtube cover bands brought the two together. Their mix of rocking guitars and electric cello created a unique dynamic, blending their love of rock artists like The Black Keys and folk bands like The Violent Femmes. Working on covers grew tiresome, and an emotional break-up soon inspired them to write their first song together. The resulting music produced a youthful and chaotic frenzy of catchy melodies and raw instrumentals. When they recruited professional gamer Luke Davis to add his stylish flair to the band on drums.
Grow Back
The Happy Fits Lyrics

She's got herself into trouble
Ten screws
They're never coming lose
They're running up and down the table
But she feels good, never upset
She's always been ill, but able
She can run whenever she wants
How she never cut her hair
Smooth as silky lightning
In the incandescent air
She's a cool, crazy killer, Mrs. Mae
What they don't understand is that she's almost at her end!
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow
Let it into the dark, let it into the dark
Let it into the dark (I can tell whose fault it's gonna be)
Tinted walls and shirts fall and a sight too plain to see
If you keep moving,
You'll get it back and no one's gonna take you away
If you feel good, turn 'em quick,
And no one's gonna take you, no one's gonna take it!
Silly, silly Mrs. Mae
She's got herself into trouble
Ten men
Emergencies at hand
They're running, got their jumper cables
But she feels good, never upset
She's always been ill, but able
She can run whenever she wants
And everyone knows she will
How she never cut her hair
Smooth as silky lightning
In the incandescent air
She's a cool, crazy killer, Mrs. Mae
What they don't understand is that she's got a pair of scissors in
Her pocket and she's really gonna cut it so
They better run or else they're gonna get it!
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow
Let it into the dark, let it into the dark
Let it into the dark (I can tell who's fault it's gonna be)
Tinted walls and shirts fall and a sight too plain to see
If you keep moving,
You'll get it back and no one's gonna take you away
If you feel good, turn 'em quick,
And no one's gonna take you, no one's gonna take it!
I can tell whose fault it's gonna be
Tinted walls and shirts fall and a sight too plain to see
If you keep moving, you'll get it back and no one's gonna take it away
If you feel good, turn 'em quick,
And no one's gonna take it, no one's gonna take it!
Let it into the dark
I can tell whose fault it's gonna be
Let it into the dark
Tinted walls and shirts fall and a sight too plain to see
Let it into the dark
If you keep moving,
You'll get it back and no one's gonna take you away
Let it into the dark
If you feel good, turn 'em quick,
And no one's gonna take you, no one's gonna take it!
The Happy Fits's song "Grow Back" tells the story of a woman, Mrs. Mae, who is facing her own mortality. Despite the fact that she's ill and at the end of her life, she remains determined and strong. The lyrics describe her hair, which she has never cut, as smooth as silky lightning in incandescent air. At first, the song seems to be about letting her hair grow back, but as it progresses, it becomes clear that the message is deeper. Mrs. Mae is not just fighting for her hair's growth, but for her life. She's a "cool, crazy killer" who won't give up easily, even when faced with ten men trying to save her.
The lyrics also speak to the idea of taking control of one's life, even when everything seems out of control. "If you keep moving, you'll get it back and no one's gonna take you away," is a message of hope and resilience. Mrs. Mae is not only battling against her illness but against those who underestimate her. She has a pair of scissors in her pocket, and she's going to cut her hair if those around her don't recognize her strength.
Overall, the song is a powerful tribute to those who battle illness and adversity, showing that even in the face of death, one can maintain their dignity and strength. It's a song about hope and determination, and how these qualities can help us overcome even the most difficult of circumstances.

[Verse 1]
Silly, silly Mrs. Mae; she’s got herself into trouble
Ten screws, they’re never coming loose; they're running up and down the table
But she feels good, never upset; she’s always been ill but able
She can run whenever she wants and everyone knows she will
How she’d never cut her hair;
A smooth, silky lightning in the incandescent air
She’s a cool, crazy killer, Mrs. Mae
What they don’t understand is that she’s almost already dead!
[Pre-Chorus]
Let it grow back, let it grow back
Let it grow back, let it grow back
(Heee!) Let it grow back, let it grow back
(Aaah!) Let it grow back, let it grow
[Chorus]
Let it into the dark!
Let it into the dark!
Let it into the dark!
(I can tell whose fault it's gonna be)
Tinted walls in a shuddered sprawl and a sight too plain to see
If you keep moving, you'll get it back
And no one's gonna take you away
If you feel good, tell 'em quick
And no one’s gonna take you, no one’s gonna take you!

*“The song "Don’t Wanna Fight” by Alabama Shakes was important in the writing of this; it started because of the squeal Brittany Howard does at the beginning of that song. That moment changed music for me. It was so intense. I wanted to do something that had a similar build up. I didn’t want the subject matter to be contrived, so I made up a story. I didn’t think it would be right for it to be a love song.
I came up with this story about a woman who is about to be lobotomized. She tries to escape from the situation with a pair of scissors she has in her pocket. She’s going to cut her hair too. That’s where the grow back part of it comes from."
