Holy Ground
The High Kings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fare thee well, my lovely Dinah, a thousand times adieu.
We’re goin’ away from the Holy Ground and the girls we all love true.
We will sail the salt seas over and we’ll return for shore,
To see again the girls we love and the Holy Ground once more.
Fine girl you are!
You’re the girl I do adore,
And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more.
Fine girl you are!

And now the storm is raging and we are far from shore;
And the good old ship is tossin’ about and the rigging is all tore.
And the secrets of my mind, my love, you’re the girl I do adore,
And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more.
Fine girl you are!
You’re the girl I do adore,
And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more.
Fine girl you are!

And now the storm is over and we are safe and well
We will go into a public house and we’ll sit and drink like hell!
We will drink strong ale and porter and we’ll make the rafters roar,
And when our money is all spent, we’ll go to sea once more.
Fine girl you are!
You’re the girl I do adore,

And still I live in hopes to see the Holy Ground once more.
Fine girl you are!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The High Kings' song Holy Ground tell the story of a sailor bidding farewell to his beloved Dinah and leaving the Holy Ground, a place where he and his crewmates developed romantic relationships with local girls. The sailor promises to return to the Holy Ground to see Dinah and his other true loves once more. The second verse describes the treacherous storm the sailor and his crew face as they sail away, with the sailor revealing that his thoughts are still consumed by his love for Dinah. However, the storm eventually subsides and they are safe again. The final verse describes the sailor and his crew going to a pub to drink and sing, knowing that eventually they'll have to return to sea and repeat the cycle all over again.

The song could be interpreted as a reflection of the harsh realities of life at sea, where sailors would develop fleeting relationships with women in ports of call and then have to leave them behind as they sailed off into the dangers of the open ocean. It captures the loneliness and longing that sailors must have felt, and their desperation to seek solace in alcohol and song. The chorus of "Fine girl you are!" could be seen as not just a tribute to one particular girl, but to all the women the sailor and his crew have fallen in love with during their travels.

Adieu to you my Dinah, a thousand times adieu
We're going away from the holy ground and the girls that we love true
We will sail the South sea over and then return for sure

Fine girl you are the girl I do adore
And still I live in hopes to see

See the storm a-rising, I see it coming soon
And the sky, it is so cloudy you can scarcely see the moon
And the good old ship, she was tossing about, the riggin' was all tore
