Shelter
The Hundredth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Separation from everything
You boarded up your mind
With whatever you could find
You chose shelter over the storm
So you could still smile
You thought hiding from the truth
Would be worthwhile
I'd rather be awake and fight the misery
I'll waste away if I stay asleep in my apathy
I'm not satisfied, trapped in a lie
Locked inside, self-defiled
Mental Suicide

I see further and I feel more finely
And if that burden be the curse
With which I must walk the earth
It's a price worth paying

Does the body rule the mind?
Or does the mind rule the body?

I think I finally know
We have to fold something to make ends meet
We're backed into a corner
And forced to live on our knees
They shun those who think
And silence those who speak
But fuck authority
Leaders make us weak

Shelter your mind
For a little while
From the cold
Truth outside

Evacuate

Overall Meaning

The song "Shelter" by The Hundredth talks about how some people choose to shut out the harsh reality and hide in a safe space (mental or physical) to feel secure. The lyrics depict the idea of how people can choose to hide behind a facade, and the idea of separation from the world. The line "Separation from everything" means that the person has detached themselves from the world, and they are stuck in a cocoon of their own making. The lines "You boarded up your mind with whatever you could find" suggest that the person has closed their mind to everything that is happening in the world, and they are happy in their little bubble.

The next few lines "...thought hiding from the truth would be worthwhile" indicate that the person is afraid of facing the harshness of the truth and what it might bring. However, the chorus of the song takes a turn into a more empowering perspective. The lyrics "I'd rather be awake and fight the misery, and waste away if I stay asleep in my apathy" imply that it's better to face the reality and fight through it than to remain inert in a state of complacency. The lyrics "mental suicide" refer to how the person is suffocating their own mind by not allowing it to explore the world and grow.

The person in the song realizes that the mind should rule the body, but often, it's the other way around. The realization comes in the lines, "Does the body rule the mind? Or does the mind rule the body? I think I finally know." The second half of the song talks about how we're backed into a corner, and how society suppresses those who try to think and speak, but the singer says, "Fuck authority," and leaders make us weak.

The music they wrote back then and the music they write now is honestly on par. It's a completely different genre and fanbase listening but it's 100 percent pure and beautiful. You just can't fucking knock the band unless you're genuinely close minded with not just your music taste, but your life and exploring things that are out of your comfort zone; though can bring equal amount of joy similar to something that confides within what you know.

"Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body" that lyric is from the smiths. I like how they did that. I like the msg their music is trying to send.
