Together with a fourth brother, Vernon, the group performed gospel music until Vernon's death a few years after its formation. After moving to the New York City area in the late 1950s, the group had their first successes during these early years, first coming to prominence in 1959 with their fourth single, "Shout", written by the three brothers. Initially a modest charted single, the song eventually sold over a million copies. In the 1960s, the group recorded songs for a variety of labels, including the top 20 single "Twist and Shout" and the Motown single "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)", before recording and issuing the Grammy Award-winning hit "It's Your Thing" on their own label, T-Neck Records.
Influenced by gospel and doo-wop music, the group began experimenting with different musical styles incorporating elements of rock and funk as well as pop balladry. The inclusion of younger brothers Ernie Isley (lead guitar, drums) and Marvin Isley (bass guitar), and Rudolph's brother-in-law Chris Jasper (keyboards, synthesizers), in 1973 turned the original vocal trio into a complete band and reached the height of their success. For the next full decade, they recorded a string of top-selling albums from 3 + 3 to Between the Sheets, including the number one album The Heat Is On.
The six-member band splintered in 1983, with Ernie, Marvin, and Chris Jasper forming the short-lived spinoff group Isley-Jasper-Isley. The oldest member, O'Kelly, died in 1986 and Rudolph and Ronald released a pair of albums as a duo before Rudolph retired to a life in the Christian ministry in 1989. Ronald reconvened the group two years later in 1991 with Ernie and Marvin; five years later, in 1996, Marvin Isley left the group due to complications of diabetes. The remaining duo of Ronald and Ernie achieved mainstream success with the albums Mission to Please (1996), Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003). Eternal spawned the top twenty hit "Contagious". As of 2019, the Isley Brothers continue to perform under the lineup of Ronald and Ernie.
The Isley Brothers have sold over 18 million units in the United States alone. They have had several hit songs including four Top 10 singles on the United States Billboard chart. With their first major hit charting in 1959 ("Shout"), and their last one in 2001 ("Contagious"), they are among the few groups ever to have hit the Billboard Hot 100 with new music in five different decades. Sixteen of their albums charted in the Top 40 and thirteen of those albums have been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the RIAA. The brothers have been honored by several musical institutions, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted them in 1992. Five years later, they were added to Hollywood's Rockwalk, and in 2003 they were inducted to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Its 2 o' damn clock in the morning Where you been?
(Baby didn't you get my 2-way
I was with my girlfriend)
You a lie
I called Kiesha and Tanya and they were both at home
(But I didn't say them though)
Well they the only friends I know
(Wait before you get all upset here's the truth)
Talk to me
(I was with my girl when she had some bad mews)
Yeah
(Her man cheated
Had her upset and confused)
But baby what's that got to do
With you coming in at two
(I'm telling you
Now she was so upset she asked me to stay with her)
Well why didn't your ass just pick up the phone and call me
(I was gonna do that but it slipped my mind I'm sorry)
(But I'm telling you the truth)
Yeah, well I got something for you
Tell me what's her name?
(Sharen)
Where she live?
(Uuummm...)
Her man's name?
(Billy)
She got kids?
(I think 1 or 2)
She got kids?
(Baby yes, no)
Here's 1 thing I got to know
How the hell is she your friend if you don't know if she got kids
Go upstairs (Busted)
Pack your bags (Cause you busted)
While you at it (Busted)
Call a cab (Cause you busted)
It's obvious (Busted)
You played around (Cause you busted)
Go upstairs and get your shit
And get the fuck up out of here now
(Frank please here me out)
Ain't nothing to talk about
(I can explain everything)
Right now I want you out this house
(Baby please one more chance
Let me tell you where I've been)
Well quit wasting my time
And say what's on your mind
(Fine
Me and some girlfriends we went dancing me Shaniqua, Shaquan, and Robin)
Well if ya'll were going shopping
Why didn't you just check in
(I was but then I thought
My cellular was off)
Now earlier (hmmm) you said dancing (uhhh)
But when I just asked (hmmm) you said shopping (uhhh)
Tell me which one you were doing
(Oh baby I must be confused)
Yeah right you real confused
Tell me where you been?
(Dancing)
Dancing where?
(Uuummm...)
The name of the club?
(Kisses)
What time it is?
(I think one or two)
What time it is?
(Three, four)
Here's one thing I got to know
At first you say dancing
But now you say shopping
(Baby I'm a victim of circumstances) oohhhhh...
(Why you don't believe I don't understand it)
Trying to slick a can of oil who you think you fooling
Now get on out my face (Baby)
Before I catch another case (Baby)
Go upstairs {Busted}
Pack your bags (I don't wanna)
While you at it {Busted}
Call a cab (A cab for what)
Its obvious {Busted}
You played around (No I'm not)
Go upstairs and get your shit (No)
And get the fuck up out of here now
(Noooooo. Innocent, innocent, innocent, innocent)
Noooo. You guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty
(Ohhhh now wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute)
Go upstairs and get your shit
And get the fuck up out of here now
[JS] - Tell me, where am I suppose to go from here
[Ron] - Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn
The Isley Brother's song "Busted" is a conversation between two lovers, one of whom has been caught in a lie about her whereabouts. The song starts with the woman coming home at 2 o'clock in the morning, and the man asking her where she has been. She lies at first, saying she was with her girlfriends, but then changes her story and admits she was with a friend whose partner cheated on her, and she asked the woman to stay with her. The man doesn't believe her and begins asking her a series of questions until she is "Busted." The woman continues to deny any wrongdoing, but the man tells her to pack her bags and leave.
The lyrics of "Busted" are about trust and honesty in a relationship. The man is suspicious of the woman when she comes back so late and catches her in a lie. He tries to give her a chance to explain, but when she continues to lie, he loses his trust in her and tells her to leave. The lyrics show how important trust and honesty are in a relationship and how lying can lead to the breakdown of a relationship.
