Land
The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

plants as high as trees
all around your knees
you're gigantic
and wonderful

crane your neck to see
a world as it should be
and it's all yours
grazing

and at night no light
no light upon the earth
at night the only light
comes from the stars

outside of geography
outside any century
we can name
your world

and at night no light
no light upon the earth
at night the only light
comes from the stars

stars uncountable
so beautiful
so beautiful
so beautiful
we'll never know

(ace squiggly synth noises)

Look! There's some pterodactyls!
They're brilliant, covered in snow-white fur.
Don't let them see you though or they'll scoop you up
and carry you off to a gory fate.
( This is probably my favourite verse of lyrics in the j.b. canon. Almost poetic. And the only give-away is a TINY MARKING on its rear. )

and up there in the sky! Orion!
one day Osiris will come and show a world
of two-legged apes what they can do.
but they could never belong here.

and they're going to make a thousand points of light upon the earth
but you know the only light comes from the stars
stars uncountable
so beautiful
we'll never know...

A world without people
in the land before time. (repeat)

Overall Meaning

The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy's song "Land" paints a vivid picture of a world without people, a world where plants tower as high as trees and all around your knees. The absence of people allows the natural world to thrive, creating a world that is outside of geography and any century. The lyrics paint a picture of a world where one can crane their neck to see a world as it should be, a world that is all yours to graze.

At night, there is no light upon the earth except for the stars, which are described as uncountable and beautiful. The absence of people creates a world where the stars can shine bright and be truly appreciated. The lyrics also describe some pterodactyls, which are covered in snow-white fur and are both brilliant and terrifying. The song comes to an end with a reference to Osiris, who is said to show a world of two-legged apes what they can do, even though they could never belong in a world without people.

Line by Line Meaning

plants as high as trees
The vegetation is so tall and lush around you that it almost feels like a forest with tree-like foliage

all around your knees
The surroundings are so dense that the plants have grown to knee-height at least, if not higher

you're gigantic
The person observing is either physically and relatively small, or the surrounding elements are so vast and tall that the observer feels tiny in comparison

and wonderful
Despite the overwhelming surroundings, the observer is still in awe of the beauty and magnificence of their environment

crane your neck to see
In order to fully take in the beauty and vastness of the surroundings, one has to tilt their head up and gaze all around

a world as it should be
The world appears to be in a pristine and ideal state - much like it would have been before humans tampered with it

and it's all yours
The observer has a deep sense of ownership and connection to this world

grazing
The action of grazing is often attributed to non-human inhabitants of landscapes, further emphasising the idea that no humans have corrupted this ideal world

and at night no light
In the absence of human-created light sources, such as street lamps and light pollution, the absence of light on the ground is stark

no light upon the earth
Further emphasising the absence of human-created light and presence of true darkness

Emphasising the overwhelming abundance of stars visible in this world

so beautiful

we'll never know
Despite the beauty and abundance of stars seen, there will always be more stars that are out of reach, and it's impossible to truly grasp the full extent of the universe

(ace squiggly synth noises)
An extraneous and theatrical note, adding to the whimsy of the entire piece

Look! There's some pterodactyls!
The observer is now encountering prehistoric animals, adding to the mystique of the world they're in

They're brilliant, covered in snow-white fur.
The description of the pterodactyls is fantastical and strange, making it clear that this world isn't quite like ours

Don't let them see you though or they'll scoop you up
The world is a dangerous place, and even creatures that seem non-threatening can be deadly

and carry you off to a gory fate.
Further emphasising how perilous and violent this world can be

( This is probably my favourite verse of lyrics in the j.b. canon. Almost poetic. And the only give-away is a TINY MARKING on its rear. )
The author of the lyrics is expressing their admiration and fondness for the verse, and the 'give-away' mentioned reinforces the idea that this world is filled with strange and unique features that are otherwise unnoticeable

and up there in the sky! Orion!
Now, the observer is pointing out celestial bodies, further emphasising how otherworldly and magical this world is

one day Osiris will come and show a world
The observer is now talking about mythology, which is keeping with the fantastical and otherworldly theme of the world they're in

of two-legged apes what they can do.
The singer is implying that this world is not meant for humans, and that any humans that do encounter it would be unprepared and perhaps incapable of functioning in it

but they could never belong here.
There is a sense of otherness and disconnection between humans and this world

and they're going to make a thousand points of light upon the earth
The 'they' in this line is likely referring to humans, and they're about to make many light sources that will make the ground much less dark

but you know the only light comes from the stars
The singer is emphasising again how the light from stars is much more 'true' and magical than that produced by humans

A world without people
Emphasising the fact that humans are not welcome in this world

in the land before time. (repeat)
The idea that this world is from a different era, before humans corrupted the Earth and altered the landscape forever.
