Cool
The Jets / Tucker Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"You wanna live in this lousy world? Play it cool"

"I wanna get even"

"Get cool"

"I wanna bust"
"Bust cool"

"I wanna go"

"Go cool"

Boy, boy, crazy boy
Get cool, boy
Got a rocket in your pocket
Keep coolly cool, boy
Don't get hot 'cause man, you've got some high times ahead
Take it slow and, Daddy-o
You can live it up and die in bed
Boy, boy, crazy boy
Stay loose, boy
Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it
Turn off the juice, boy
Go man, go
But not like a yo-yo, school boy

"Just play it cool, boy
Real cool"

"Easy, Action"

"Shh"

"Cool it A-Rab, cool it, cool it"

"Pow, hahaha"

Cool, go
Crazy, cool, go
Crazy, go

Boy, boy, crazy boy
Stay loose, boy
Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it
Turn off the juice, boy

Just play it cool, boy
Real cool

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'Cool' by Tucker Smith suggests some advice for young boys, asking them to remain calm and composed in their teenage years. The opening lines of the song, 'Boy, boy, crazy boy, get cool, boy!' establishes the song's theme of a coming-of-age story for young men. The phrase 'rocket in your pocket' can be interpreted as a metaphor for a young boy's anxiousness about adulthood, and the advice to 'keep coolly cool, boy' encourages him to stay calm and collected despite the overwhelming emotions he may feel. The song highlights the fact that there are exciting times ahead for young men, however, it's essential to take it slow and enjoy life without overwhelming oneself. The lyrics then urge the boys to avoid getting too excited too quickly and to maintain a balanced approach towards life. The line 'Go man, go, But not like a yo-yo schoolboy' further supports the idea of finding a middle ground and avoiding impulsiveness.

In conclusion, the song 'Cool' is a timeless classic that offers advice to young boys in their teenage years to remain calm and composed. It encourages them to embrace the changes that come with growing up while still enjoying their youth before the responsibilities of adulthood take over.

The body language and choreography are off the charts fantastic. You can FEEL that they all are on the verge of spontaneous combustion, full of such passion and anxiety that it can only be expressed through intense movement. And their traumatized moods are reflected by the dark, creepy parking garage. A masterpiece of cinema.

The switch of Krupke and Cool is something that should be reflected in all of the stage productions of the show. It makes much, much, much more sense. With Krupke, they were kids...punks griping about the cops. In Cool, they witnessed the murders of Riff and Nardo and had to grow up in a hurry, and the song reflects this.

It makes sense that they switched it for the movie. If you think about, a group of kids on the run from the cops after witnessing 2 murders, are not likely to stop around the fence and sing some silly comedic number. What they would do, is sing Cool.

@Stephen Treadwell "Nardo" is Bernardo's nickname. We hear both Anita and Maria call him that a few times
