Joy to the World
The John Alldis Choir Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine
Singin'

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

If I were the king of the world
Tell you what I'd do
I'd throw away the cars and the bars and the war
Make sweet love to you
Sing it now

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

You know I love the ladies
Love to have my fun
I'm a high life flyer and a rainbow rider
A straight shootin' son-of-a-gun
I said a straight shootin' son-of-a-gun

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the world
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

I want to tell you
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls

Overall Meaning

"Joy to the World" is a cheerful song that expresses happiness and universal joy. The first verse talks about a man named Jeremiah who is a bullfrog and a good friend of the singer. Although the singer never understands Jeremiah's words, he enjoys drinking his wine. The chorus then invites everyone to join in and sing about joy to the world and all its inhabitants - boys, girls, fishes in the sea, and all of us. The second verse continues with the singer imagining how he would change the world if he were king. He would get rid of cars, bars, and wars and make love to his special someone. The third and final verse describes the singer as a lover of life and fun, who is adventurous and fearless, and who wishes joy to the world.

The song "Joy to the World" was not originally a Christmas song, although its melody was adapted into a Christmas hymn by Lowell Mason in 1839. Its original lyrics were written by Isaac Watts in 1719 and were based on Psalm 98. The hymn was widely popular and became a staple in American hymnals. However, it was not until the 20th century that the melody was adapted into the Christmas song we know today.
