The First is from North Carolina. They have recorded on the John Lennon bus. They released their first abum "Under The Sombrero" on April 20 2007. They are no longer active.

The second is a ska band from Hamilton, Ontario formed mostly by students and ex-students of Westmount and Hill Park secondary schools. The band became locally huge to an extent that hadn't been seen for a ska band in the Hamilton area since the Wisties. On February 20, 2006, the sax player of the band died and the band hasn't played any shows since. The website of this band is http://thejollyrogers.ca/.

The third is a pirate-themed folk group that plays at Renaissance festivals. Their high-energy performances of traditional sea shanties, humorous songs and improvisational comedy skits are big crowd pleasers where ever they go. http://www.chivalry.com/jollyrogers/

As a history buff you’ll not enjoy it. It’s not as romantic as we depict their lives now.

Pirates would’ve had survived, or escaped from press gangs that kidnapped them for service in the Royal Navy.

Pirates being criminals, also would’ve had a short life span. They died young, or were captured by the Royal Navy to usually be executed.

Pirates ships were also dirty, and cramped. Slow traveling speeds, bad food, dirty water, and poor hygiene made them places ripe for getting sick, not to mention that locating, and hiding treasure was always a problem.

I think you should stick to modern life instead!

Davey Jones (from pirates of the Caribbean) was actually never the captain of the Flying Dutchman and the kraken never had anything to do with it either. The real legend is about Willem van der Decken, a Dutch captain from the 17th century. He was a very successful captain for the Dutch fleet. With all that success van der Decken became very greedy, and he began plundering and killing. According to faith, back then it was forbidden to set sail during Easter, but van der Decken was so greedy he denied all the rules. So he set sail to Kaapstad (nowadays known as the Cape) for trade and spices and things like that. When the ship entered a dangerous storm, the helmsman of the ship wanted to head back. Van der Decken became furious and threw him overboard. Then he took the helm and screamed ‘God of de duivel, de Kaap vaar ik om. Al moet ik varen tot het laatste oordeel.” (“God or the devil, I shal sail around the Cape. Even if I have to sail until the Last Judgment”). With these words the devil took control of the ship. Now van der Decken is cursed to sail until the ending of time (he can’t step foot on land once in ten years like Davey Jones if you thought that).

Edit: I made a small error while writing this, they were sailing to East-India (Indonesia) and not the Cape. It was common back then to make a stop at the Cape because it’s quite a long way from the Netherlands to Indonesia. That’s why he says “I shall sail around the Cape” because he doesn’t want to take a break.

There are actually allot of versions of the story.

The first story goes that the crew on the ship had a disease and that they got send away if they wanted to go into Port, because the people where scared that the disease would spread into their town. Even though they died, the crew and his captain still want to go ashore, but they can't

A other story tells that the ship was sailing from the East-Indies to Holland. There was a fiance on board and the captain fell in love with the woman. After he fell in love he killed the man so he could Mary the woman. But the woman disappeared and cursed the ship to sail forever until the captain find someone to love ashore.

The third story goes that the captain wanted to build a settlement near Cape Town so travelers could rest there if they wanted to go to Asia. But a storm came and the crew rebelled after the captain was not able to get out of the storm. But the captain killed the rebel leaders i n a unorthodox way, cursing the ship and his crew

In actual sea lore there's no connection between the Kraken, Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman. That's entirely a Pirates of the Caribbean thing.

The Kraken is a classical mythological monster originating from Greek mythology, said to attack and sink ships.

I see a lot of mistakes here in the comment section, the flying dutchman is a story based on sightings of ghost ships around cape horn. A lot of people think this story is based on a ship belonging to Willem van der Decken, thing it, this person probably is fictional. He is the fictional captain of the flying dutchman in the book "The Phantom Ship" by Frederick Marryat.

The actual person who the story of Fredrick is likely based on is Bernard Fokke , he was a captain sailing for the VOC and renowned for his record time of 3 months and 4 days from the republic to Java. His fast voyages caused people to think his ships were haunted by the devil.

So the real life counterpart of the captain of the Flying dutchman is not Davey Jones, nor Willem van der Decken, but Bernard Fokke.

Well for us it stays Hendrick van der Decken. Flying dutchman is 1 ship who wanted to sail to the east indies for stuff, on the way back he wanted to build a settlement in the cape of good hope, so he rounded the cape but a storm was near but the captain was like ''We will round the cape, at all cost.'' and so the ship sunk, now their ghosts sail for eternity, it was even seen by King george, in ww2 by Karl Dönitz. It's 1 ship and it stays like it.

Most modern bulletresistent vests can easily protect you from a lot of musket shots, and tactics back then where outnumber them and scream while charging for intimidation. Assuming that we would have to destroy their entire bodies to get rid of them, mg nests should be able to hold the line for long enough so an artillery/mortar battery could be set up, which can be used to vaporise the pirates, then to make sure we win a naval force like that of the US could come and ctrl alt delete them and their ship. Just because they would outnumber us, doesn't mean we would lose

Ah the Dutchman, he apparently sailed into a storm at Easter on the Cape of good Hope (basically Cape Town on the Southern tip of South Africa) and died.
Cape Town was a Dutch Colony for the Dutch East India company and a perfect midway between Europe and the East. Oranges also grow well there so fruit was picked up to ward off scurvy.
It’s great for fishing and a great stop but unfortunately (though no hurricanes form near the South) it’s one of the worst storm destinations since it’s right where the Cold Atlantic and Warm Indian oceans collide which create terrible storms offshore. Autumn (Easter) would also be a bad time to go sailing off because as the tropic of Capricorn shifts it brings the storm-front closer to shore and right on top of unwary ships.

I'm gonna preface this by saying I dont stutter. Never really have. We were on a sloop chasing another while I was peering off of the bow with a spyglass. We knew they had kegs so we were being cautious and trying to avoid shadowing. I thought I saw a mermaid so I put the spyglass down and looked around, not really sure what happened but it took me a moment to find it and at the time it was practically right in front of us. I was saying i thought i had seen something, so all my friend heard was "i thought i saw something"

Everytime the chorus kicks in, i pciture dnd, a sea adventure, and the bard loses his shit, another crew insulted his ship, and as he rushes them he yells "shes called the flying dutchman and its rage that fills her sails)

The other part of the chorus(turn this ship around) is the nps enemy pirates realzing they fucked up
