The Jon Butcher Axis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's late at night in the neighborhood
And the thieves have all gone to bed
They can hear your heartbeat in the distance
As you lay down your weary head

But don't worry, 'cause the dawn is breaking
In another room halfway around the world
And you can't waste your life
Wishing upon a star

'Cause if wishes were horses
If wishes were horses
If wishes were horses
Then dreamers would ride
Huh, yes they would

A girl lives her life missing
Some things that she never had
Spends too much time in the unemployment line
You see in her eyes that it drives her mad

Deep within her constitution
Her pride and her dignity show through
So she works that dream
'Cause it's all she can do

If wishes were horses
If wishes were horses
She says: if wishes were horses
Then dreamers would ride
Yes they would

Now I'm looking
All around me for the answers
And I know you're looking hard too
I know what you're thinking
Maybe wishes come true

If wishes were horses
If wishes were horses

I know, if wishes were horses
Then dreamers would ride

Overall Meaning

The Jon Butcher Axis's song "Wishes" is a poignant reflection on the futility of wishing for things in life when one is faced with difficult circumstances, as well as the power of hope and determination to keep moving forward. The opening lyrics paint a picture of a calm and peaceful neighborhood at night, with the implication being that the danger and chaos of the day have passed for the time being. However, the singer's tone quickly changes to one of resignation and defeat as they acknowledge that no amount of wishing upon a star will change their circumstances or bring them closer to their dreams.

The second verse introduces a character, a young woman who is struggling with unemployment and the feeling that she is missing out on something in life. Despite her frustrations, she retains a strong sense of pride and dignity, and she channels her energy and ambition into pursuing her dreams as best she can. The chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the message that if wishes alone could make things happen, dreamers might have an easier time of it.

Overall, "Wishes" is a bittersweet meditation on the struggle to find hope and meaning in difficult times, and the importance of persevering through adversity. The somber melody and lyrical depth of the song make it a standout in the Jon Butcher Axis's oeuvre and a classic of the 80s era of rock music.

I come back every now and again to try to touch that 16 yo person I was in 87 who listened to this over and over. That intro gives me chills every time. Absolutely brilliant!

I'm right here with you - I was 18 when this hit. It just has a great upbeat magical quality to it. I played it for my 18 year old (now) son who was BLOWN AWAY! Music just isn't the same anymore.

@piperzdad

An old Army buddy introduced me to this song.  Just found out tonight he passed away.  I will never forget you old friend.  One day we will sit down, and drink a beer, and tell lies about the old days.

@ckschmidt4854

Got to see him in Dallas 5 times. Got to sit and drink with him at the HardRock in Dallas. One of my all time favorites. The man could play and has never been given the credit he deserves, Thank You Jon.............

@jred6046

Because everyone’s still hooked on Hendrix, but Jon is alive and he’s super skilled wish I got to see him live. Can only imagine how awesome

@johnpearson4899

He used to be famous for claiming that when Hendrix died, his spirit entered Jon's body. DJs everywhere would nearly always talk about just before or right after they played this song on the radio.

@stlrockn

@@johnpearson4899 I think you are confusing him with the urban legend that surrounded Frank Marino (which also wasn't true). I know Jon for some years and take it from me he never said anything like that.
