For many years, the group presented a ragamuffin image and a vagabonding lifestyle, travelling around Europe in a double-decker bus and houseboat. Their image was enhanced by their eclectic and often homemade clothing, and the very long hair worn by both male and female members of the band. The Kelly Family began to break up in 2000 and afterwards they performed mostly as individuals or sub-sets of the whole group and took on a more mainstream look.

You rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you away
Wee found the way across the wild Missouri
O Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away you rolling river
O Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you away
You rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you away
We found the way across the wild Missouri
The lyrics to The Kelly Family's song "Shenandoah" convey a deep longing and affection for a place and its people. The song references the Shenandoah River, a tributary of the Potomac River located in Virginia and West Virginia, as well as the wild Missouri River. The repeated line "I long to hear you away, you rolling river" reflects the desire to be reunited with the picturesque and captivating Shenandoah River, which holds a special place in the singer's heart.
The second stanza introduces a heartfelt expression of love for Shenandoah's daughter, further emphasizing the emotional connection to this place. The lyrics suggest that the singer has found their way across the wild Missouri, perhaps implying that they have journeyed from one river to another, symbolizing a search for connection and a sense of home.
