I get teary every time I watch this because this was one of my favorite Fame performances and I used to dance an interpretation of this in dance school. Debbie Allen and Michael DeLorenzo in their prime were fabulous along with the wonderful Erica Gimpel.

This is how life was for dance students in the City. It makes me proud to have lived and experienced this first hand.

My favorite song from Fame. I used to watch it religiously and had the tune in my head this morning and wondered if it was on YouTube and boom, there it was. Amazing. Debbie Allen's best dancer sequence and I was happy to see Michael De Lorenzo featured in the part because Gene Anthony Ray took most of them. He's a great dancer in his own right. I am shook. That kind of life-affirming style of dance is no longer appreciated or practiced in modern era. Debbie Allen epitomized that Ailey-style which was graceful/athletic combo which was seen in the 80’s (the golden age of dance, imo). P.S. This song is wonderful, and the dancing is phenomenal - though it's a little sad, considering the message of the song, and the girl that plays the street kid is Dominique Dunne who was murdered not long after this was filmed. R.I.P. Dominique.

I watched it on black and white tv box..and even so was great. It marked my childhood, my teenage maturing, I lived with those people there, shared my feelings with them, even dreamed of applying the school of the arts believing mrs berg would answer my phonecall back then😀😀 as I lived in europe and tjey aired it in italian synchronisation (which I didn't mind) but as life usually has it--some cast members actually were of italian origin.. and of course I had my crush on Bruno, learning sometime later that though he was adopted (by italian family too) he never managed to trace his true parents, yet he stayed devoted to his italian curreri ancestors.. respect! Fame will never die, not of you great performers&artists!!

I first saw this and watched it when I was around 5-6 years old. That was nearly 35-40+ years ago and I can still remember most of the songs from this even though some I heard only once. I thought that I would check out YouTube for this through back considering that I sing this song at least maybe 4-5 times a year (it might be more). As I said I've only ever heard this just the one time but for some unknown reason the tune has made a home in my 🧠 and I can't get rid of it. I would like to see what is so special about this song that makes me sing it to myself (very badly I might add) every single dam year without fail

Michael D is also in the movie Fame as a teenager and was in Head of the Class and Resurrection Blvd a series that was on Showtime back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. I have always been amazed over the level of speed Ms. Allen possessed on the dancer floor and still had the grace.

This show presented positive role models, making something of themselves and striving for success which even today they celebrate. It was ahead of its time with a range of ethnicities represented and was uplifting. Now entertainment TV its focused on self obsessed people desperately looking for fame without any talent or inclination to develop a talent whatsoever, who then sit or lie in front of the camera doing nothing of interest unless you enjoy voyeurism.

One of my FAVORITE PERFORMANCES!! And I agree! I enjoyed GLEE, but it doesn't come close. We have to remember though GLEE focused on a choral group that sang AND danced. FAME was an Entire SCHOOL that Embodied ALL of the Arts. There was Nothing they DIDN'T tackle. Ergo, their theater arts were the Cream of the Crop. A dancing Glee Club just doesn't hold up!

Recently I watched a show from a couple of years back where British comedian Justin Lee Collins tries to reunite the cast of Fame. As part of the show he interviews Erica Gimpel (Coco) who tells the story about a woman who was planning to commit suicide. The woman saw this song performed on the tv show and was so inspired that she decided not to commit suicide, and she wrote a letter to the producers of the show thanking them.

Probably because of the spontaneous structure of the musical numbers. I thought of FAME also- used to watch FAME back in the day- and I see a similarity in style, but there is room for appreciation of both series. GLEE obviously isn't a dancing, theater, or instrumental music series, but the same kind of uber-professional artistry is there.

@mdafalls That's because the show was cast realistically, unlike something like Glee. It's very rare in musical theatre to find a true "triple threat" someone who dances like Debbie Allen, sings like Irene Cara, and acts like Meril Streep. So, Fame was cast with an eye towards what the characters were going to spend the most time doing. A lot of the "drama" on Fame involved "Cocoa" so they needed someone that could pass as a dancer/singer, but was primarily and actor, Erica Gimpel. And so on.
