Wanting to cut themselves off from their pasts, Mosshart and Hince considered their new project to be Year Zero in their careers, so they renamed themselves "VV" and "Hotel" respectively and began writing sparse, minimalist songs together with the aid of a drum machine. In 2001 they showcased their new songs on a well received demo tape. In true punk rock fashion, however, the pair shunned approaches from major record labels. Recording as VV and Hotel, they contributed the song "Restaurant Blouse" to the compilation If the Twenty-First Century Did Not Exist, It Would Be Necessary to Invent It. Shortly after this they recorded their debut release, the Black Rooster EP, which saw release on British indie label Domino Records and was picked up for distribution by Dim Mak Records in the United States.
Following international touring, they entered Toe Rag studios to record their debut album Keep on Your Mean Side, mostly on 8-track, in just 2 weeks.

Their second album, No Wow, was released by Domino records on February 21, 2005. Featuring an artier, less guitar rock sound, the record embraced New Wave and post punk influences and sounded even more stripped down than Keep on Your Mean Side. The first single, The Good Ones, was released on February 7, 2005 and reached number 23 in the UK singles charts.
VV sang the song Meds on Placebo's 2006 eponymous album.
Their third album Midnight Boom was released March 10, 2008. It was followed by 5 different singles since its release.

In search of something real
How cruel to be exposed
To everything that I can't touch but still feel
How'd I end up here?
So uncomfortable
I'm a stranger in this body
And that's a fact that fate has brought me
I had to disappear
So it would all just go away
Now the end is drawing near
And God I wish you would've stayed
It cuts deep 'cause our hearts are still attached
A deadly touch spreads an itch that can't be scratched
Sometimes I wish it would all just fade to black
I can't go back
Now I'm lost on my own
In search of something real
How cruel to be exposed
To everything that I can't touch but still feel
Lost on my own
They'll never understand
How tragic to suppose
That I almost held the world in my hands
A captive beauty queen
So untouchable
In the town that has disowned me
Nice guys finish last
And that's a fact that she has shown me
He made the cut but she deserves a better man
I won't rust like the liars and Letterman
Hedge my bets 'cause it can't hurt to pretend
Until the end
Now I'm lost on my own
In search of something real
How cruel to be exposed
To everything that I can't touch but still feel
Lost on my own
They'll never understand
How tragic to suppose
That I almost held the world in my hands
So tell the town below
As death took hold
You watched helplessly
But to hell with letting go
'Cause when it snows
It falls to you from me
It falls to you from me
Lost on my own
In search of something real
How cruel to be exposed
To everything that I can't touch but still feel
Lost on my own
They'll never understand
How tragic to suppose
That I almost held the world in my hands
To hell with letting go
'Cause when it snows
It falls to you from me
The Kills' "Hand" is a sad and introspective song that seems to be told from the perspective of someone who feels lost, uncomfortable and disconnected. The lyrics evoke a sense of resignation and melancholy, as the singer comes to terms with the fact that they can't go back to the way things were, or fully connect with the world around them, even though they can still feel its presence.
The song touches on themes of loneliness, isolation, and the human desire for connection and understanding. The singer seems to be longing for someone to understand them, but also resigned to the fact that they'll never truly be able to communicate the depth of their feelings. The reference to a "captive beauty queen" who is "so untouchable" suggests that the singer might be grappling with unrequited love, or a sense of unfulfilled potential.
Overall, "Hand" is a haunting and evocative song that captures the bittersweet nature of human existence, and the struggles we all face to find meaning in our lives.

I want my money back
I'm down here drowning in your fat
You got me on my knees
Praying for everything you lack
I ain't afraid of you
I'm just a victim of your fears
You cower in your tower
Praying that I'll disappear
I got another plan
One that requires me to stand
On the stage or in the street
Don't need no microphone or beat
And when you hear this song
If you ain't dead sing along
Bang and strum to these here drums
Till you get where you belong
[Chorus]
I got a list of demands
Written on the palm of my hands
I ball my fist, you're gonna
Know where I stand
I'm living hand to mouth
You wanna be somebody? See somebody?
Try and free somebody?
I wrote a song for you today
While I was sitting in my room
I jumped up on my bed today
And I played it on a broom
I didn't think that it would be a song
That you would hear
But when I played it in my head
I made you reappear
I wrote a video for it
And I acted out each part
And then I took your picture out
And taped it to my heart
I've taped you to my heart, dear
I've taped you to my
Heart and if you pull away from me
You'll tear my life apart.

The Kills is so underrated and I do not understand why. Greetings from Istanbul.
Gabriel Sirius
i agree i wish the kills were the most popular band ever because their so good
Mary Ann Bittle
@Gergo KertiLOL, what? "Different purposes?" No, man... just, no.
Every band plays 1) to enjoy their music, and 2) to sell their merchandise. That is all. To think otherwise is nonsense.

@Scorpionturtle
You are truly lames as fuck. Everybody do covers. The kills been around since early 2000s. What about Saul? (I know, but do you know?) I like his music also but that's just completely nonsense what you wrote. Different genre, different sounding, different purposes. Don't be a fool mate. Educate yourself son. You have a lot to learn.
Cheers from Budapest.

Just because they are not mainstream doesn’t mean that they are underrated.

Holy shit I wanna thank everyone in the comments that directed me to Saul and the original version...I thought that the kills were crushing it until I heard the original song and that shit is completely fire. I’ve got 3rd degree burns it’s so good.

Saul Williams one of the best poets in the 21st century.

LOVE it so much. You guys managed the electro transition unlike no other band. You rule the shit.

If you haven't heard the original by Saul Williams...you should do yourself a favor today. <3
