Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Here Comes Flash
The Kinks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hide your daughters, hide your wives.
Lock your doors and stay inside
Here comes Flash.
There's no way that you can win,
You must obey his every whim,
Or else he's going to do you in.
He will smile at you, be a friend to you,
Then he's gonna screw you just like that.
He is going to use you, his heavies will abuse you,
And then he's gonna lean on you,
Here comes Flash.
He is gonna rough you up,
Duff you up and touch you up,
And then he's gonna screw you up.
Even though he's mean on you,
There's nothing else that you can do
Just sit back and take his abuse.
He will smile at you, be so sweet to you.
Then he's gonna cheat on you.
You'd better run, you'd better fly.
Hide your daughters, hide your wives.
Lock your doors and stay inside.
Here comes Flash.
Once we loved and trusted him,
Now his thugs and bullies make us live in sin.
They suppress us, oppress us, molest us, possess us.
You'd better run, you'd better fly.
Hide your daughters, hide your wives.
And lock your doors and stay inside.
He will smile at you, be a friend to you,
Then he's gonna screw you just like that.
You'd better run, you'd better fly.
Hide your daughters, hide your wives.
And lock your doors and stay inside.
Here comes Flash.
There's no way that you can win,
You must obey his every whim
Or else he's going to do you in.
Here comes Flash.
Here comes Flash.
The Kinks' song "Here Comes Flash" unveils a story of a powerful, violent, and dangerous figure called Flash who terrorizes and controls a community. The lyrics explicitly warn people to hide their wives and daughters, lock their doors, and stay inside because Flash is coming. The song speaks of a frightening individual, who is ruthless and unstoppable, and whose every whim must be obeyed, or one will suffer the consequences, such as abuse and oppression. The song also mentions how Flash seems to be friendly at first, but eventually betrays peoples' trust, cheats them, and causes harm without remorse.
The story of Flash is not specific to one individual but is representative of any person or group who holds excessive power, oppresses, suppresses, or inflicts harm on those vulnerable to them. The theme of the song is on the abuse of power and how it can be destructive to people's lives, causing them to live in fear, mistrust, and oppression. The Kinks, through the song, were shedding light on the societal problem of power abuse and calling for a need for change and justice for those who are oppressed.
