Like a Summer Rain
The Ladybug Transistor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like a summer rain
On an autumn day
Not a cloud in the sky
But we had a fight
She left me last night
Oooh here comes the rain
Here comes the rain
Tears
No this can't be tears
Cause I never cry
If she was near
If she don't come back
I know I'm to blame
Ooh here comes the rain
Like a summer rain
Here comes the rain
Rain
Falling from my eyes
Cause I've realised
That this was goodbye
If she don't come back
I'll die
Here comes the rain
Like a summer rain
Here comes the rain
Like a summer rain
Here comes the rain
Here comes the rain
Like a summer rain
Here comes the rain
Like a summer rain
Here comes the rain
The Ladybug Transistor's "Like a Summer Rain" is a heartbreakingly beautiful song about lost love. The first verse sets the scene with the line "Rain like a summer rain on an autumn day, not a cloud in the sky but we had a fight, she left me last night". The rain represents the tears falling down the singer's face at the loss of their lover. The weather is a metaphor for their emotions - even though it's a clear day, they are experiencing a storm. The chorus echoes this metaphor with the lines "Ooh here comes the rain, like a summer rain, here comes the rain". The singer can't help but feel like "the rain" is following them around, indicating that they are still feeling overwhelmed by emotions.
The second verse deepens the metaphor with the line "Tears, no this can't be tears, 'cause I never cry if she was near". The singer is admitting that they are crying, but trying to deny it at the same time. They can't admit to their own emotions, which is a coping mechanism that is often seen in people experiencing heartbreak. The third verse brings the singer to a realization that this is goodbye, and if their lover doesn't come back, they'll "die". Here, the rain is both literal and metaphorical - it's raining outside, but also raining on the singer's heart. The repetition of the chorus brings closure to the song, with the rain symbolizing the fact that the singer is moving on from the heartbreak, but acknowledging that it will always be with them in some way.
