The band formed in 1986 as an underground punk rock act. Their popularity grew during the following decade with the 1992 album It's A Shame About Ray, which was produced, engineered, and mixed by The Robb Brothers (Bruce Robb, Dee, and Joe), followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson", which eventually became one of the band's most successful singles.
Throughout its various incarnations, recording and touring lineups of the band have included co-founders Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, John Strohm (Blake Babies), Doug Trachten, Corey Loog Brennan, Byron Hoag, Ben Daughtry, Juliana Hatfield (Blake Babies), Nic Dalton (Godstar, Sneeze, The Plunderers), Dave Ryan, Patrick "Murph" Murphy (Dinosaur Jr), Bill Gibson (Eastern Dark), Mark 'Budola' Newman, Kenny Lyon, Vess Ruhtenberg, Devon Ashley, Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson (Descendents), P. David Hazel and various others.
Cited as one of the most important alternative rock groups, The Lemonheads were active until 1997 and went on hiatus, but reformed with a new lineup in 2005 and released The Lemonheads in the following year. The band released its latest album, Varshons, in June 2009.

I don't care for your bleeps and bloops
Go away, why don't you just shut up
Your crazy smile, digital dial
I hate ya, every bolt and screw
I don't like anything about you
You're a dirty robot
(I'm a dirty robot)
You're a dirty robot
(I'm a dirty robot)
You're a dirty robot
(I'm a dirty robot)
You're a dirty robot
(I'm a dirty robot)
No, no, no
[Chorus:Repeat x3]
(I'm a dirty robot)
The Lemonheads’ song “Dirty Robot” is a clear example of a love-hate relationship between two entities, in this case, the singer and the robot. The singer expresses a strong dislike for the robot and its “metal looks” and “bleeps and bloops.” The lyrics even suggest that the singer hates “every bolt and screw” of the robot. The repetitive chorus emphasizes the fact that both the singer (who claims to be “a dirty robot” too) and the robot are equally “dirty” and unwanted.
The song is an interesting commentary on today’s society, where technology is not always welcome. It seems like the singer is suggesting that our reliance on technology and machines is dangerous and that it is taking away from our humanity. Perhaps the “dirty” label is a reflection of how technology is not always perfect, and how its flaws can have negative consequences that we cannot always foresee. Ultimately, the lyrics of the song invite the listener to question the extent to which we should embrace technology in our lives.
As for the music itself, “Dirty Robot” is a fast-paced, energetic track with a catchy melody and a driving beat. The lyrics are delivered with a sense of urgency and frustration, adding to the overall theme of the song. Although short, the song is memorable and leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
