The band formed in 1986 as an underground punk rock act. Their popularity grew during the following decade with the 1992 album It's A Shame About Ray, which was produced, engineered, and mixed by The Robb Brothers (Bruce Robb, Dee, and Joe), followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson", which eventually became one of the band's most successful singles.
Throughout its various incarnations, recording and touring lineups of the band have included co-founders Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, John Strohm (Blake Babies), Doug Trachten, Corey Loog Brennan, Byron Hoag, Ben Daughtry, Juliana Hatfield (Blake Babies), Nic Dalton (Godstar, Sneeze, The Plunderers), Dave Ryan, Patrick "Murph" Murphy (Dinosaur Jr), Bill Gibson (Eastern Dark), Mark 'Budola' Newman, Kenny Lyon, Vess Ruhtenberg, Devon Ashley, Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson (Descendents), P. David Hazel and various others.
Cited as one of the most important alternative rock groups, The Lemonheads were active until 1997 and went on hiatus, but reformed with a new lineup in 2005 and released The Lemonheads in the following year. The band released its latest album, Varshons, in June 2009.
My Hero

Yeah, Zero is a wonderful thing
In fact, Zero is my hero!
How can Zero be a hero?
Well, there are all kinds of heroes, you know
A man can get to be a hero
Or by studying very hard
And becoming a weightless astronaut
And then there are heroes of other sorts
Like the heroes, you know, from watching sports
But a hero doesn't have to be a grown up person, you know
A hero can be a very big dog
Who comes to your rescue
Or a very little boy who's smart enough to know what to do
But let me tell you about my favorite hero
My hero, Zero, such a funny little hero
But 'til you came along
We counted on our fingers and toes
Now you're here to stay
And nobody really knows
How wonderful you are
Why we could never reach a star
Without you, Zero, my hero
How wonderful you are
What's so wonderful about a zero?
It's nothing, isn't it?
Sure, it represents nothing alone
But place a zero after 1
And you've got yourself a 10
See how important that is?
When you run out of digits
You can start all over again
See how convenient that is?
That's why with only ten digits including zero
You can count as high as you could ever go
Forever, towards infinity
No one ever gets there, but you could try
10 billion zeros
From the cavemen to the weirdos
Who invented you
They counted on their fingers and toes
Or maybe some sticks and stones, rocks and bones
Their neighbors' toes
Yeah yeah
And nobody really knows
How wonderful you are
Why you could never reach a star
Without you, Zero, my hero
Zero, how wonderful you are
Place one zero after any number
And you've multiplied that number by 10
See how easy that is
Place two zeros after any number
And you've multiplied that number by 100
See how simple that is
Place three zeros after any number
And you've multiplied that number by 1, 000
Et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad astra, forever and ever
With zero, my hero, how wonderful you are
The Lemonheads' song "My Hero Zero" celebrates the often-overlooked value of the number zero. The opening lines playfully proclaim that "Zero is a wonderful thing / In fact, Zero is my hero!" which might seem like an odd statement given that zero represents "nothing." However, the lyrics go on to explain the numerous ways in which zero is indispensable. For example, "place a zero after 1 / and you've got yourself a 10" or "place two zeros after any number / and you've multiplied that number by 100."
The song proceeds to offer various examples of heroes, ranging from soldiers to athletes to large dogs, before introducing the titular hero, Zero. The chorus continually emphasizes how "wonderful" Zero is, and how it allows for the seemingly infinite possibilities of counting and mathematics. The final lines, "et cetera, ad astra, forever and ever / with zero, my hero, how wonderful you are," reinforce the idea of Zero's boundless potential. The song can thus be viewed not only as a celebration of Zero but also as an ode to the power of imagination and creative thinking.
