These singers debuted on The Lawrence Welk Show in 1955 after their school classmate, Larry Welk, son of Lawrence Welk, brought them to the attention of his father. They were a mainstay on the show until they left to start a career of their own in 1968. The quartet was only three members from 1960 to 1964; oldest sister Dianne got married, left the group, and then rejoined them again.
Over the decades, they recorded many albums. Their first album was on Brunswick Records and later on Coral, Dot, Ranwood and Mercury. They have recently released four CD volumes of songs taken from their own ABC-TV show.
They are not related to the Beatle John Lennon.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
The Lennon Sisters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
And if you ever saw him
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
"Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history!
The lyrics to The Lennon Sisters’s rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a fun and heartwarming tale about a special reindeer named Rudolph who was different from his peers. With the use of anaphora, the song writer mentions all the other reindeer names, such as Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen, before posing a question to the listeners, "But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?" This rhetorical question sets up the story of Rudolph, who had a distinct physical feature - a red, shiny nose. The song continues with a description of Rudolph's unique physical feature and how it garnered negative attention from other reindeers who used to tease him, call him names and didn't let him participate in any of their games.
The song takes a turn when Santa Claus himself asks Rudolph for help one foggy Christmas Eve. At this point, Rudolph's shining nose becomes useful to guide Santa's sleigh through the fog. The other reindeer finally come to appreciate Rudolph for who he is, and they start to love him, shouting out their admiration and joy. The song ends with the idea of Rudolph becoming one of the heroes of Christmas folklore and history.
