Far From Home
The Levellers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's warm by the river, the weir keeps us clean
The woodsmoke and cigarettes are all that we need
Marking the dirt with twigs and simple words spoke
Kicking the dust so we can just

Dance the dance that plays with fire
Play guitar and play it inspired
You said that you would leave not ever
Underneath the sky forever

It's cool by the sea when the pavement is hot
We take a walk down there to see what we've got
An old man collecting fifty beautiful words
Cleaning the beach so he can teach us to

Dance the dance that plays with fire
Play guitar and play it inspired
You said that you would leave not ever
Underneath the sky forever

It's cold by the pane glass on the high street we played
But there's always a penny in the music we made
So far from home with no means of return
Burning bridges, so we always

Dance the dance that plays with fire
Play guitar and play it inspired
You said that you would leave not ever
Underneath the sky forever

We're so far from home
No need to return

There's so much that we have taught
And so much that we have learned

Overall Meaning

The Levellers’ “Far From Home” paints pictures of escape, of finding peace in different surroundings. The first stanza focuses on a river – a common motif for reflection, rebirth, and renewal. The second stanza shifts to the sea, where an old man teaching the singer that a clean environment is important. The chorus is a call to arms for these moments: “Dance the dance that plays with fire/Play guitar and play it inspired/You said that you would leave not ever/Underneath the sky forever.” Here, the song is saying that it's important to recognize that we need to find moments in life that we can enjoy and savor.

The lyrics relate back to the idea of freedom and escape that many of The Levellers' songs address. In this song, the singer is far from home and doesn't have the means of returning. For them, it seems like it's more important to have the freedom that they have found than to go back to where they came from. There might be some nostalgia for their former life, but ultimately they have found something that fulfills them more greatly than what they left behind.

Asked a device to play this today and got a bizarrly neutered cut of this song. This original is the only worthwhile version. Sucks for the kids. Amazon just can't bear to see people having fun stomping, pogo-ing, and smashing up their kitchen!
