Broudie and Rogers formed the act as the "perfect pop project", and Lightning Seeds broke through in 1989 with the psychedelic synth pop hit, "Pure", which made the UK Top 20 and was a minor hit on US pop radio and a major success on US alternative radio. In the 1990s Lightning Seeds became one of the most popular and enterprising of the era. The 1995 album Jollification was a critical masterpiece, spawning several successful singles. In 1996, Lightning Seeds provided the music and production for the official England anthem for the Euro '96 football tournament. The lyrics were written and sung by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, and the song, "Three Lions", went straight into the charts at number one.
Since the release of 1999's Tilt the act has taken a back seat as Broudie concentrated on producing the works of others. However, in 2006, Broudie reformed the band with a selection of new members, releasing a Very Best Of album, and performing a number of tour dates. In 2009, the band released Four Winds, their first album in 10 years.

I was hoping that the kids would love me
Felt rough acting up on the TV
But everyone was smiling by midweek
Nothing gets me down
I please the crowd
I scream they shout
Crowdpleaser
Your face all over the tabloids
We'll turn some heads with a new fad
I've been dreaming all about it in rehab
Nothing gets me down
I please the crowd
I scream they shout
Crowdpleaser
I've been caring less and less
Since my overnight success
Not they love me in the press
''cause I'm constantly depressed
I'll come back when I decide
Overnight and twice the size
Since my overnight success
I've been caring less and less
You can't go wrong
Here's a happy song
You can sing along
You can sing along
The lyrics to The Lightning Seeds's song Crowdpleaser depict the life of a musician who is striving to please their audience, despite the underlying loneliness and sense of inadequacy. The singer has poured their heart out onto a CD, hoping that it will be well-received by the younger generation. Despite feeling rough while acting on TV, the singer is pleased to see everyone smiling by midweek. They are a true crowdpleaser, someone who loves to scream and shout, and be loved by the audience.
The singer is ecstatic to be back with the big boys and sees their face all over the tabloids. They plan to turn some heads with a new fad that they have been dreaming about in rehab. However, despite all the success, the singer is constantly depressed and has been caring less and less about their life. They come to the realization that they'll come back when they decide, and that they've been caring less since their overnight success.
The lyrics have a deep message and reflect the struggles that many musicians face in the music industry. Despite being successful on the outside, they may be struggling with their own demons on the inside.
