Broudie and Rogers formed the act as the "perfect pop project", and Lightning Seeds broke through in 1989 with the psychedelic synth pop hit, "Pure", which made the UK Top 20 and was a minor hit on US pop radio and a major success on US alternative radio. In the 1990s Lightning Seeds became one of the most popular and enterprising of the era. The 1995 album Jollification was a critical masterpiece, spawning several successful singles. In 1996, Lightning Seeds provided the music and production for the official England anthem for the Euro '96 football tournament. The lyrics were written and sung by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, and the song, "Three Lions", went straight into the charts at number one.
Since the release of 1999's Tilt the act has taken a back seat as Broudie concentrated on producing the works of others. However, in 2006, Broudie reformed the band with a selection of new members, releasing a Very Best Of album, and performing a number of tour dates. In 2009, the band released Four Winds, their first album in 10 years.

There's so many things to tell you
But now you're gone, now you're gone
The price of the words I could never say
Was the tears washed the loved away
Please, please, come back to me
The price as the smiles and the kisses fade
Please, please come back to me
As I search to find the reasons to bring you home
The only words I can find to tell you are 'I was wrong'
The price of the words I could never say
Was the tears washed the loved away
Please, please, come back to me
The price as the smiles and the kisses fade
Was the hopes and the memories stayed
Please, please come back to me
Maybe today, or maybe tomorrow
I'll have to beg you to stay
I'll be your candle
I'll show you the way
If I could find the words to bring you back to me
The Lightning Seeds's song The Price is a heart-wrenching ballad about the unspoken words that lead to the end of a relationship. The opening line, "The honey taste still hangs on my tongue," suggests that the singer is still holding on to memories of the good times they had with their partner. However, despite all the things they still wish they could tell their partner, they are gone and the chance to say those things is lost forever. The chorus, "The price of the words I could never say, was the tears washed the loved away," is a poignant reminder that holding back our feelings can come at a cost.
The second verse expresses regret and a yearning to have their partner back. The singer recognizes that they made a mistake and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make things right. They want to bring their partner back with promises to be their "candle" and to "show them the way." The final lines, "If I could find the words to bring you back to me," leave the listener feeling uncertain about whether the singer ever gets the chance to make things right.
Overall, The Price is a melancholic depiction of a relationship that ends due to the cost of unspoken words. It serves as a cautionary tale to those who hold back their feelings and fail to communicate openly in their relationships.
