Winded
The Lil Smokies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silence always happens first
Black, opaque and nameless
The sun beats green like cactus thirst
Shamed and no forgiveness

It's a little uneven to feel this way again
The city sleeps in the dim moonlight but the
Sky will fade away

But you wait until the wind has died
Maybe we could use a little to fly
We could use a little to fly

Undone knots of frayed mistakes
Loops once tight now jostle
How are we still standing straight
See the branches bending

It's a little uneven to feel this way again
The city dreams in the dim moonlight but the
Sky will fade away

But you wait until the wind has died
Maybe we could use a little to fly
We could use a little to fly

Silence always happens first
Black, opaque and nameless
The sun beats green like cactus thirst
Shamed and no forgiveness

It's a little uneven to feel this way again
The city dreams in the dim moonlight
cs the sky will fade away

But you wait until the wind has died

Maybe we could use a little to fly
We could use a little to fly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Winded" by The Lil Smokies depict a sense of silence and emptiness at the beginning. The mention of silence happening first suggests a stillness that precedes any action or noise. The imagery of blackness, opaqueness, and namelessness further reinforces this sense of void. The line "The sun beats green like cactus thirst" evokes a feeling of undesirable intensity and discomfort that may arise from this barrenness. It implies a harsh and unquenchable desire for something, perhaps salvation or connection.

The next set of lyrics introduces a contrast between feeling uneven and the city sleeping under the dim moonlight. This juxtaposition suggests a sense of isolation and disconnection from the bustling world around. The line "But you wait until the wind has died, maybe we could use a little to fly" reveals a glimmer of hope. The wind, typically associated with movement and change, is viewed as a potential source of upliftment or escape from the current state. It hints at the possibility of finding solace or freedom once the chaotic elements subside.

The following stanza describes undone knots of frayed mistakes and branches bending. This imagery symbolizes the consequences of past errors and the inherent fragility of one's stability. Despite these challenges, the lyrics question how they are still standing straight, implying resilience and perseverance. The repetition of feeling uneven suggests a recurring pattern of uncertainty and unrest.

The final repetition of the opening lines reinforces the theme of silence and emptiness, emphasizing its permanence and the lack of forgiveness. The acknowledgement of feeling uneven is repeated, highlighting the ongoing struggle to find stability. The fading sky at the end suggests the gradual disappearance of hope or possibilities.

Ultimately, the lyrics convey a longing for change and a desire to find a way to rise above the obstacles. The phrase "Maybe we could use a little to fly" suggests the potential for growth and liberation through embracing the unpredictable and taking risks. It encapsulates the song's underlying message of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity.

I so agree! They should get way more attention! Just recently discovered them as the fiddler's cousin told me about the band and Jake's incredible fiddle playing. The whole band is great.
