Someone
The Lovers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I don't want just a girl to fool around with
Well, I don't want just a girl to ball, alright
What I want is a girl that I care about, or I
Want nothing at all
Nothing at all, alright

Well, I won't pretend I like a girl if I really don't
And act like she's great when she makes me feel appalled
All I want is a girl that I care about or I
Want nothing at all
Oh, nothing at all

Well, I don't want some cocaine-sniffing tramp in the bar
Well, I don't want a triumph in the car
I don't want to make a rich girl crawl
What I want is a girl that I care about or I
Want no one at all

Alright, listen to this now

Picture this, I'm walking with my girlfriend
Twenty-eight misguided souls combine, say "We're moving in!"
There's a certain kind of girl
That you care about so much
You say "I don't care what you guys do to me
But her, don't touch!"

'Cause I don't want just a girl to fool around with
Well, I don't want just a girl to ball
What I want is a girl that I care about or I
Want nothing at all
Oh, alright

Well, I don't want a girl to fool around with, no
And I don't want just a girl to ball, no
What I want is a girl that I care about or I

Want nothing at all
Oh, alright, gentlemen

Overall Meaning

The Lovers' song "Someone" is about the desire for a genuine connection with a romantic partner. The lyrics emphasize that the singer is not interested in casual flings or superficial relationships. They want someone they care about deeply or nothing at all. The verses describe the singer's aversion to certain types of women, such as those who use drugs, seek money or status, or exhibit qualities that the singer finds unappealing. The song culminates in a scene where the singer is willing to defend their partner from harm because of the depth of their feelings.

Overall, this song reflects a yearning for authenticity and commitment in a romantic relationship. The lyrics reject the idea of "settling" for anything less than a true connection. The repetition of the phrase "or I want nothing at all" reinforces this sentiment, emphasizing that the singer is not willing to compromise on their values or standards.

Incredible record, Charles! According to discogs.com, "This is the same group that also appeared as the Emotions on Vardan and the Pacesetters on labels such as Minit and Fantasy."

Paul Riofski

@Paul Burek Apparently not, Paul. Here is a detailed article about this group of Emotions/Lovers, who had to change their name because of another group with the same name on the East Coast that predated them: http://solidhitsoul.com/vardan.html I believe that the East Coast set of Emotions was yet another group, because the Emotions with Lena Calhoun issued a few singles on the Los Angeles-based Flip label in 1961, toward the end of that label's tenure (Flip issued a few more into 1963). Interestingly, searching for Lena Calhoun will also lead you to the great jazz singer Lena Horne, as her given birth name was Lena Mary Calhoune Horne. Please let us know if you can find out anything more about these groups!
