Compared to Southern rock pioneers and label-mates The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker had a more country and western feel, with the flute being a key lead instrument in their sound. "Can't You See", "Fire on the Mountain", and "This Ol' Cowboy" are among their songs that received appreciable FM radio airplay, while "Heard It in a Love Song" made it to #14 as a single on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
Original bassist Tommy Caldwell died in a car crash on April 28, 1980. His brother, guitarist Toy Caldwell, died of respiratory failure on February 25, 1993.
There was no band member named "Marshall Tucker". Originally, the band called itself The Toy Factory (named after lead-guitarist Toy Caldwell). But by the time the band released its first album they had become the Marshall Tucker Band. During a radio interview in Hempstead, NY in 1973, Tommy Caldwell explained the origins of the band's name:
"There's an old blind dude [in Spartanburg, SC] that tunes pianos, and his name is Marshall Tucker... We didn't name the band after him, but we just kind of liked that name and stuck with it."

Something in me said boy, move on...
Don't know what it is the good lord bred it in my bones..
And I'm searchin for a rainbow, and if the wind ever shows me where to go, you'd be waiting at the end and I know, I'd see the hill with that pot of gold.
I'd see the hill with that pot of gold
This old mount I'm ridin', she's gettin' kinda' tired,
But in my heart she knows there's this one desire...
She's gonna' take me to the end of our road....
Then she'll lay down and die and I'll say 'God reat her soul'.......
And I'm searchin for a rainbow, and if the wind ever shows me where to go, you'd be waiting at the end and I know, I'd see the hill with that pot of gold.
I'd see the hill with that pot of gold
And I'm searchin for a rainbow, and if the wind ever shows me where to go, you'd be waiting at the end and I know, I'd see the hill with that pot of gold.
I'd see the hill with that pot of gold
And I'm searchin' for a rainbow.. and if the wind ever shows me where to go, I'll see the hill with that pot of gold.....
I'll see the hill with that pot of gold...
In the song "Searchin' for a Rainbow" by The Marshall Tucker Band, the singer rides into town with a desire to stay, but he feels compelled to keep moving on. He's searching for a rainbow, a symbol of hope and prosperity, and if the wind ever shows him where to go, he knows he'll find that pot of gold. The singer's mount is old and tired, but she shares his desire to keep moving forward. He knows that eventually, she will lay down and die, but he'll always remember her fondly.
The lyrics of "Searchin' for a Rainbow" speak to the human desire for something better, something more. The rainbow represents a glimpse of beauty and hope in an otherwise dreary world. The singer is on a journey to find that beauty and hope, and he knows that he'll find it if he keeps searching. The song encapsulates the American Dream, the idea that through hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve success.
Overall, "Searchin' for a Rainbow" is a hopeful and optimistic song that encourages listeners to keep moving forward despite the odds. It's a reminder that there's always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, if we're willing to keep searching.

I've always loved Paul Riddle's sidestick playing. Also prominent on Can't You See, it's part of what makes the MTB sound.
