The Promise
The Martins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never said that I would give you silver or gold
Or that you would never feel the fire or shiver in the cold
But I did say you'd never walk through this world alone
And I did say, don't make this world your home

I never said that fear wouldn't find you in the night
Or that loneliness was something you'd never have to fight
But I did say I'd be right there by your side
And I did say I'll always help you fight

'Cause you know I made a promise that I intend to keep
My grace will be sufficient in every time of need
My love will be the anchor that you can hold onto
This is the promise, this is the promise I made to you

I never said that friends would never turn their backs on you
Or that the world around you wouldn't see you as a fool
But I did say like me, you'll surely be despised
And I did say my ways confound the wise

I didn't say you'd never taste the bitter kiss of death
Or have to walk through chilly Jordan to enter into rest
But I did say I'd be waiting right on the other side (yeah, yeah)
And I did say I'll dry every tear you cry

'Cause you know I made a promise that I've prepared a place
And some day sooner than you think you'll see me face to face
And you'll sing with the angels and a countless multitude
This is the promise, this is the promise I've made to you

So just keep on walkin', don't turn to the left or right
And in the midst of darkness, let this be your light
That hell can't separate us and you're gonna make it through

This is the promise, this is the promise I made to you, oh
This is the promise, this is the promise I made to you

Overall Meaning

The Martins's song "The Promise" is a beautiful reminder of God's promise of love and support to his children. The lyrics describe the challenges of life, including fear, loneliness, and even death. However, despite these obstacles, the promise of God's unfailing love and grace is present throughout the song.

The first verse acknowledges that the road of life may not always be easy, and that the world can be a cold and unforgiving place. However, the promise of God's constant presence and support is what will keep us going. The second verse acknowledges that even those closest to us may betray us, but God will never leave us. The bridge of the song reinforces the promise of heaven, where we will be reunited with God and loved ones who have gone before us.

Overall, the lyrics present a message of hope, even in the midst of life's greatest struggles. The promise of God's love and presence provides a foundation upon which we can navigate life's challenges.

I'm crying as I write this. I'm a 69 year old combat disabled Marine having been disabled 50 years ago. As I get older it gets harder. Recently I found your song, The Promise, that you performed with he Gathers. When I'm having a bad day and things seem impossible, I play it, over and over. I cry the whole time. Then, I have the understanding and strength to go on. My faith is unshakable but when one sits alone, in pain, full of regrets, this song, and specifically your performance, gives me the renewed strength I need. I've listened to this about 15 times today. Thank you, all three of you, so very much. May God bless your lives and sustain your ministry as long as it serves His needs. I pray you see this with the hopes it blesses your hearts and lives as you and it have blessed mine.

This is one of the wake-up songs that my wife and I listen to every morning while we drink our first cup of coffee. It's awesome to know the Lord.

I recently lost my darling first love to cancer. He served as a Senior Crown Prosecutor in the UK for over 25 years and returned to his homeland and served as special prosecutor in the highest court in the land, Court of Appeal, serving as a voice for the voiceless. But more than this, he served His Lord by the life he lived, the witness he shared with his colleagues and clients. He loved his children, his wife and his Lord. Yes, we all have regrets but thank God for His mercy and faithfulness that we have the blessed hope of reuniting with our loved ones.
