How Can I
The Marvelettes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Got me reachin', reachin', you got me reachin', reachin')
Reachin' for somethin' I can't have, though it may cause me pain
Needing his love so much till only hurt remains
Standing high on society hill, a voice calls out to me
From a boy I love & need so much, he says he's not for me
'Cause I live up & he lives down, on the poor side of town
But still I'm reachin', reachin'; I can't help reachin', reachin'
'Cause he tells me he has nothin' & his place is not with me
His pride keeps him away, but still I love him more each day
So I'll keep...

Reachin' for somethin' I can't have, though it may cause me pain
Needing his love so much till only hurt remains
He says he cannot give me all the things a rich man can
"Stay on your hill & don't look down; forget our love began"
& even though he loves me so, he must let me go
But still I'm reachin', reachin'; I can't help reachin', reachin'
For a boy who cannot give me nothin' but his love
But he's everything I need & I've got to make him see
So I'll keep...

Reachin' for somethin' I can't have, though it may cause me pain
Needing his love so much till only hurt remains

I need him & I want him & I don't care if he has nothing
Just to have him close to me, that's all I ever need

Overall Meaning

In The Marvelettes’ song “Reachin' for Something I Can't Have,” the lyrics detail the story of a love that is not meant to be. The singer of the song is on the upper-class side of town and is in love with a boy who lives on the poor side of town. Despite her position, she wants to be with the boy and keeps reaching and pursuing him, even though it causes her pain. She knows that she could have a wealthy man who could give her all the things she desires, but her heart only wants the poor boy who has nothing to offer but his love.

The song’s lyrics speak to the nature of love and the sacrifices that one must make for it. The singer is willing to give up her position in society and all the things she could have to be with the one her heart desires. She is willing to hurt herself and face rejection to be with him. This paints the picture of how sometimes love is not just about what someone can give to you materially, but the connection and feelings that come with it.

Am I the only one who actually is here because like this song?

@bryanvega8097

No me too. But captain marvel did remind me of this classic

@johnn.5033

I was wondering why this video had so many million of views. I knew it was a popular song but was still genuinely surprised. Then I saw one comment about Captain Marvel and then knew that it was probably because of that. So no, you are not the only one checking this song out because you like lol. I looked it because I looked up all the different Billboard Number 1 songs that have charted by different artists such as I'll Be There by the Jackson 5 and Mariah Carey. This song charter number one again in the 1970s with the Carpenters
