The Dark
The Mess Lyrics

Scary ghost stories
And drinking beer
Cause it's fun to scare your friends
Fun to scare your friends
Remember the one about the guy with the hook
And how he's waiting
For you in
Backseat of your car
Well here's one you don't know
And this is how it goes
Now you're alone in your basement watching
A slasher flick
With Jason Voorhees
Cause it's fun to scare yourself
Fun to scare yourself
All of the sudden the lights they go out
And now you hear
Something come
And creep up from behind
Creep up from behind
Well here's one you don't know
And this is how it goes
Am I
Sick or
Am I
Just numb
The lyrics of "The Dark" by The Mess delve into the theme of fear and the thrill that comes with scaring oneself and others. The song starts with the scene of friends sitting around a campfire, engaging in the classic activity of telling scary ghost stories while enjoying some drinks. The line "Cause it's fun to scare your friends" emphasizes the enjoyment derived from frightening others.
The lyrics then transition to a familiar urban legend about the guy with the hook who lurks in the backseat of a car. This story is commonly used to spook others, and the repetition of "Fun to scare your friends" highlights the amusement derived from creating fear. The song takes a twist with the line "Well here's one you don't know, and this is how it goes," introducing a new narrative.
The scene shifts to being alone in a basement, watching a slasher movie featuring Jason Voorhees, the iconic character from the "Friday the 13th" franchise. It suggests that scaring oneself can be thrilling and enjoyable. However, the tone changes abruptly as the lights go out, and a sense of impending danger is introduced with the line "Something come and creep up from behind." This creates a feeling of vulnerability and fear, challenging the earlier notion of fear as a pleasurable experience.
The final lines, "Am I sick or am I just numb," leave the listener questioning the motivations behind seeking out fear and questioning one's own emotional state. The lyrics suggest a potential disconnect between seeking thrills and the underlying emotional impact.
Overall, "The Dark" explores the dichotomy of fear as entertainment and the possible psychological toll it can take. It raises questions about the line between amusement and an unhealthy fascination with fear, leaving the listener to ponder their own relationship with fear and its effects on their emotional well-being.
