Mutants
The Mighty Boosh Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face
We are the mutant people
Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face
I'm not a man, I am a reject
And even if you try
You know that you can't
Stop me with your human skills
Cos I've got nine feet and gills
And I can breath underwater
And I can swing from a tree
And I can do what I wanna
And I wanna be free, yeah!
We are the mutant race
Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face
We are the mutant people
Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face
We are the mutant race
You don't looka like me, I don't looka like you
We are the mutant people
We're gonna bust ourselves right outta this zoo.
The Mighty Boosh's song "Mutants" can be interpreted as a satire on the idea of the outcast or the 'other' in society. A mutant race of people have been created and they are being ostracized and rejected by the mainstream. The lyrics "We are the mutant race. Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face" points to the idea that the mutant race is feared and hated purely because they are different. They are deemed ugly, grotesque, and non-human by the 'normal' people.
The line "I'm not a man, I am a reject" seems to be a commentary on the societal norms that dictate what is considered 'normal'. The mutants are labelled as rejects purely because they do not conform to the expectations placed on them. The line "You know that you can't stop me with your human skills" reinforces the idea that the mutants are more than capable of existing outside the boundaries of societal norms.
The chorus "We are the mutant people. Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face" is a powerful statement. Although they are being rejected, the mutants are taking ownership of their identity and boldly stating who they are. The final line "We're gonna bust ourselves right outta this zoo" is a clear indication that the mutants are not going to sit idly by and allow themselves to be imprisoned by the 'normal' people.
