Madness
The Mighty Maytones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woy-e-oy, too much madness upon the land, Jah Jah
I got to wonder
If it's because the time so hard
Yes I got to wonder
If it cause from to much drinking
Or it cause from to much smoking
I don't know, I want to know
Yes, the dread enough hurt
Most of this madness
Comes from the wickedness
Of our own people
Because they don't want to see there
Brothers and sisters
Reach the road of success
But I'm hoping
Father will change this situation
For it's bad, many dreadful
Yes, the dread enough hurt
(.)
Most of our skilful people
That do the useful in our country
Can't give them a helping hand at all
Because madness they control
Of their little brain
And they just don't know what to do
But I'm hoping
Father will change this situation
For it's bad, many dreadful
Yes, the dread enough hurt

Yes, imagine, enough hurt
Everywhere you go

Overall Meaning

The Mighty Maytones's song, "Madness," is a commentary on the prevalence of chaos and destruction in society. The song is written from the perspective of someone who is observing the chaos and trying to understand the root cause of it. The singer wonders if the cause is due to difficult times, excessive drinking or smoking, or the wickedness of people who don't want to see others succeed. The singer is hopeful that things will change for the better, but acknowledges that the situation is bad and many people are suffering.

The first stanza of the song suggests that there is too much madness in the world and that the singer is curious to understand why. The singer ponders whether the chaos is due to challenging times, excessive drinking and smoking habits, or the selfish wickedness of some individuals who don't want to see others succeed. The second stanza highlights the issue of capable and skilled people who are unable to receive any help to improve their position. The reason behind this situation is the madness of some individuals who control the situation but don't know what to do with it. The singer is hopeful that the situation will change for the better, but the chorus reminds us that many people are suffering.

Overall, the song is a poignant commentary on the state of the world, its problems, and its people. The Mighty Maytones's "Madness" highlights the pressing need for society to address its problems, work together for the common good, and become more compassionate towards one another.

one of the mighty roots era harmony duos, Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant. Wonderful voices blending together. They started at the very beginning of the reggae era, releasing singles in 1968. This post is a fine example of their mature style. From vinyl, mate, , just the way it should be! Thanks for this excellent upload!

I heard this piece for the first time at Enugu (Nigeria) about 1976/77 while on long term holidays as a high school student. My taste for it has never changed till this day. One of the best renditions of reggae music.
