Down the New Low-Down
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It isn't alcohol no yaller gal at all
thrills me fills me with the pep I've got

I've got a pair of feet
That found a low down beat
Low down, down around a spot that's hot!

I've got no peace
I'm losin' my lease on livin'
Here's the how?
I'm tellin' you now to give in!

Oh, make 'em play that crazy thing again
I've gotta do that lazy swing again.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

I got my feet to misbehavin' now,
I got a soul that's not for savin' now.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

That dancin' demon has my feet in a trance,
'cause while I'm dreamin'
I go into that dance

And once you hear the haunting strain to it,

I'd like to bet you'll go insane to it.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

Overall Meaning

The Mills Brothers's song Doin' the New Low Down is a classic jazz song about the thrilling feeling of dancing to a new, low down beat. The lyrics speak of a pair of feet that have found a new rhythm that excites and fills the singer with energy. The beat is described as hot, and the singer can't resist giving in to the temptation to dance to it.

The lyrics also speak of a loss of peace and lease on living due to the addictive nature of the beat. The singer can't resist the "dancin' demon" that takes control of their feet and puts them in a trance. The song speaks to the timeless human desire to let loose and lose oneself in the wild abandon of music and dance.

thanks for posting this wonderful, classic music!

The "mix" to which I referred was not the digital modern term, but the ingenuity of combining the Mills Brothers with their fellow Kapp contractee Cab Calloway on a recording. Kapp had mixed, and by this I mean inconsistent, results with his multiple-star releases, but this one really works.

-One thing I'll give Jack Kapp is tht he did mix together a lot of different folks to give the music a really different feel. I sure wouldn't have thought ofmixing Calloway with the Mills Brothers.

@hoopjnky Actually there was no such thing as "mixing" when these recordings were made. Everyone had to record in the same studio. What you are listening to is "live in the studio recording."

As sampled in many cartoons of the period.
