I Don't Know Enough About You
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know a little bit about a lot of things
But I don't know enough about you
Just when I think you're mine you try a different line
And baby what can I do?

I read the latest news, no buttons on my shoes
But baby, I'm confused about you
You get me in a spin, oh, what a stew I'm in
'Cause I don't know enough about you

Jack-of-all-trades, master of none
And isn't it a shame?
I'm so sure that you'd be good for me
If you'd only play my game

You know I went to school and I'm nobody's fool
That is to say until I met you
I know a little bit about a lot of things
But I don't know enough about you

I know a little bit about a lot of things
But I don't know enough about you
Just when I think you're mine, you try a different line
And baby what can I do?

I read the latest news, no buttons on my shoes
But baby, I'm confused about you
You get me in a spin, oh, what a stew I'm in
'Cause I don't know enough about you

Oh, jack-of-all-trades, master of none
And isn't it a shame?
I'm so sure that you'd be good for me
If you'd only play my game

You know I went to school and I'm nobody's fool
That is to say until I met you

I know a little bit about a lot of things
But I don't know enough, baby 'bout you

Overall Meaning

The Mills Brothers's song "I Don't Know Enough About You" is a playful yet frustrated expression of not fully understanding someone, particularly in a romantic context. The song begins with the singer acknowledging their own intelligence and knowledge ("I know a little bit about a lot of things"), but admitting that their understanding of the person they're addressing is lacking ("But I don't know enough about you"). This is compounded by the fact that the person in question keeps changing their behavior and reactions, leaving the singer feeling uncertain and confused.

The chorus repeats the central theme, with the singer admitting that they're in a "spin" and feel like they're in a "stew" because of their lack of knowledge about the other person. The bridge section introduces the phrase "jack-of-all-trades, master of none", which is often used to describe someone who has many skills but is not an expert in any one area. The singer then laments that they are sure the other person would be good for them, if only they would "play my game".

Overall, the lyrics convey a mix of wit, frustration, and longing, with the singer expressing a desire for deeper understanding and connection with the other person.

Wow! what a great tune by an exceptional quartet, my old dad loved the Mills Brothers with their close harmony. he's been gone now some 23years but I have all of his cherished recordings on 78's and I've just found this one on You tube so thank you so much, brings a lot of very happy memories of dad singing along to this tune to my mum and dancing with her in the front room of our home.. thanks again..
