Rockin Chair
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Old rocking chair's got me, my cane by my side,
Fetch me that gin, son, 'fore I tan your hide.
Can't get from this cabin, goin' nowhere
Just set me here grabbin' at the flies round this rocking chair

My dear old aunt Harriet, in Heaven she be,
Send me sweet chariot, for the end of the trouble I see
Old rocking chair gets it, judgement day is here
Chained to my rocking chair.

Old rocking chair's got me, son, (rocking chair got you father)
My cane by my side, (yes, your cane by your side)
Now fetch me a little gin son, (ain't got no gin, father)
What? 'fore I tan your hide, now, (you're gonna tan my hide)
You know, I can't get from this old cabin, (what cabin? joking)
I ain't goin' nowhere. (why ain't you goin' nowhere?)
Just sittin' me here grabbin' (grabbin') at the flies round this old rocking chair
(rocking chair)

Now you remember dear old aunt Harriet, (aunt Harriet)
How long in Heaven she be? (she's up in Heaven)
Send me down, send me down sweet (sweet chariot) chariot,
End of this trouble I see. (I see, daddy)

Old rocking chair gets it son, (rocking chair get it, father)

Judgement day is here, too. (your judgement day is here)
Chained to my rocking, old rocking chair.

Overall Meaning

The Mills Brothers's song "Rockin' Chair" is a song about an elderly man who is stuck in his cabin, unable to leave due to his age and physical condition. He is sitting in his rocking chair with his cane by his side, feeling trapped and restless. He asks for some gin from his son, and threatens to "tan [his] hide" if he does not comply. The man reflects on his life, including his dear old aunt Harriet who has already passed away and is now in Heaven. He asks for a "sweet chariot" to come and take him away from his troubles. He knows that his time is running out as he feels that judgement day is near, and he is chained to his rocking chair.

On one level, the song is a powerful reflection on the limitations of old age – how it robs people of their mobility and can leave them feeling trapped and powerless. The man in the song is unable to leave his cabin and is stuck in his rocking chair. Yet, the song also touches on the idea of spiritual release – the sweet chariot that will take him away from his troubles and the inevitability of heavenly judgement.

Interestingly, the song has become a staple of many traditional jazz and Dixieland bands, with various artists recording covers of the song. The song has been covered by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and many more.
