Star Dust
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you

When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

And beside a garden wall
When the stars were bright
You were in my arms
The nightingale tells it's fairy tale
A paradise where roses grew

Though I dream in vain
In my heart it always will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

Though I dream in vain
In my heart it always will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

The memory of love's refrain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Mills Brothers's song Star Dust takes the listeners on a journey of a man who is reminiscing about the past and dreaming of a song to bring him closer to his lost love. The opening lines of the song "Sometimes I wonder why I spend the lonely nights dreaming of a song; the melody haunts my reverie" establishes the loneliness and longing that the man in the song is experiencing. The man is reminiscing about his past love, which was the inspiration behind all his kisses, but that love is long gone. Now he takes solace in the memories of the past, which are embodied in the stardust of a song.

The song Star Dust explores the importance of memories and the emotional connection that they have with us. The memories that we hold dear help us relive a particular moment or period in our lives. The lyrics convey the idea that even though the man is dreaming in vain, the memory of his love's refrain will always remain in his heart. This song's emotional depth is enhanced by the rhythmic flow and melody, which enforce the feeling of nostalgia and loss.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

Amazing that the "trumpet" is not a trumpet at all, but the vocalizations of one of the brothers.

Indeed! The Mills Brothers had something we don't see much of today - true talent! In The Great Depression especially I feel we got that the most! Don't have your own tools? Than make your own! The Mills Brothers certainly did.

Wow! Thank you for mentioning that. I really thought it was just a long trumpet intro. Amazing falsetto!
