Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
The Modern Post Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And with fear and trembling stand
Ponder nothing earthly minded
For with blessing in His hand
Christ our God to earth descendeth
Our full homage to demand
Alleluia, the Christ has cme
King of kings, yet born of Mary
As of old on earth He stood
Lord of lords, in human vesture
In the body and the blood
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food
Alleluia, the Christ has come
Alleluia, the Holy One
Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spread their vanguard through the sky
Veil their faces to the Presence
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, the Christ has come
Alleluia, the Holy One
The lyrics to The Modern Post's song Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence are rich in meaning and symbolism. The song is a hymn that dates back to the 4th century and is a Eucharistic hymn from the Divine Liturgy of St. James. The lyrics encourage us to stand in awe and reverence before Christ who has descended to earth with blessings in his hand. We are to set aside earthly concerns and distractions and offer our full homage to him.
The song also speaks of Christ's birth through Mary, a humble and ordinary woman who gave birth to the King of kings. He was not born to royalty or in a grand palace, but in a stable surrounded by animals. Yet, he is Lord of lords, clothed in human vesture, and offers himself as heavenly food to all who believe in him.
The song also alludes to the hosts of angels who veil their faces in the presence of the Lord and sing ceaseless Alleluias. The final verse is a triumphant declaration of Alleluias to the Lord Most High, a fitting end to a song that urges us to stand in reverence before Christ, the Holy One.

Wow, this is a great band, where had it been all of my life!?

In Thrice. Thrice is my favorite band ever, and i don't think many understand the beauty and subtlety of their lyrics. Thrice was never a "christian" band due to the multiple beliefs of the band members, but Dustin always managed to beautifully infuse some biblical allusions and verses into his lyrics. His work is also influenced by the works of C.S. Lewis, a noted Christian author. The style is much more rock (which is why i prefer it), but i encourage you to listen and see what you find. Look up the lyrics to songs like "of dust and nations," "moving mountains," "listen through me," "child of dust," "music box," "image of the invisible," "like moths to flame," "the messenger," and basically ALL of the album "Beggars." Even songs like "cold cash and colder hearts" have no biblical allusions, but discuss christian values like humility and generosity.
