No one ever can do it the way she did. Every actress who tried to impersonate MM failed miserably. There was an inner glow, an ethereal quality to her that cannot be copied. Very few actresses and actors had that quality of total uniqueness. Jean Harlow had it. James Dean maybe. Sofia Loren certainly. But MM had a divine something about her like Maria Callas. @boop We don't know what her mother was like. She may have been perfectly sane BEFORE they locked her up. You should know that back then they committed or otherwise locked up women for all kinds of "offenses" such as adultery, premarital sex, having a sex drive, out of wedlock births, talking back to men, etc, etc, etc. They still do in some countries. Marilyn was fine, imo. Just ahead of her time AND the sexual revolution of the 1960s. (Fox studio made up countless lies about her in attempts to gain control of her.)

No not just a body. Marilyn had that certain something that commanded your attention. She had alot of inner beauty and innocence that radiated through to her surface. Poor lady just couldnt see in herself what everybody else was seeing and did not know what to make of it. Marilyn was ahead if her time back then , her way of looking and thinking and also especially her clothes , I sometimes have to do a reality check when watching her movies sometimes because she is so timeless , she wore a lot of white and black and clothes that were not too busy unlike a lot of 50ish style clothes .

This image went through many iterations and changes were made based on what the director wanted. I used to get teased for walking like this—“wiggle”— and I would always try to walk without moving my hips but couldn’t. I never understood I walked any different than “normal” until I started watching people walk, and how either stiff or clumsily/ungracecful most people walk. This is why Marilyn’s is so iconic! I haven't been a big fan of Marilyn's earlier movies but this one stands the test of time and gave Marilyn the chance to have a dramatic leading role playing the villainess. I enjoy seeing Marilyn filmed outdoors in natural light though I imagine there were reflectors and such to enhance the light. I read Catherine Gildner's autobiographical book "Too Close to the Falls" and she tells about how as a child she briefly met Marilyn during the filming of "Niagara" when helping to take a prescription to MM from the drugstore Ms. Gildner's father operated. Marilyn is in only a few pages but this book is laugh-out-loud funny along with dealing with serious subjects.

There is an old saying in Hollywood: "Dying young is a great career move." MM died at the peak of her beauty, so we will always remember her thus. What would have happened if she had grown old and just gradually faded away? Who would remember her today? Likewise James Dean and Jean Harlow.

@ValRose I was talking about those two specific actors. Dean and MM were both so self-destructive they probably would not have reached 40 anyway. Yes, many actors have reached old age, but few of them maintained their popularity. Garbo had sense enough to quit when she was young, and as a result her image never faded.

It makes sense also that Marilyn would be remembered for her unique style and talent and looks, even if she had lived past age 80. So you cannot possibly know what James Dean's legend would be had he still been around in old age. Getting old and overweight, did not seem to hurt Brando's legend. And dying too young is not a predictor of an actor achieving icon status, as lots get somewhat forgotten after death.

If Meryl Streep had died at 35, it's doubtful she would be as highly acclaimed by so many generations, like she is today. And actors who die long before their time, and long before their peers, often will go underappreciated as the years go by. Their great career performances in great films, their filmography itself, falling by the wayside. As an example, my favorite actor Laurence Harvey who died of ca at age 45.

They do. Look for the understated in beautiful colors that do not clash or over ride your own coloring, excellent fit with quality fabrics. The price tag maybe higher, but they are built to last. Also know what to accentuate and what to leave alone. It's important that you wear the clothes and that the clothes do not wear you. If you do not feel right in them then they are not meant for you.

It is said she had one leg longer than the other. I have that too. My right leg is almost 1 inch longer than left. She said that's what gave her the sway. It does affect the way you walk and cause back & neck pain eventually. It throws your center of balance off and if you have curvature of the spine like I do that makes it worse. I often wonder if she suffered from those pains and problems.

Regardless of unhappiness, her main problem was alcoholism and barbituate addiction, both depressives. She overdosed many times. It was like walking a tightrope.
I do think she deliberately overdosed to kill herself. Besides general unhappiness and addiction, I believe she did not want to get older. She didn't want to look older, and she had noticed signs of aging.
