Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.
Golden Boy
The Mountain Goats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
you must try to lead a good life
you must do unto others
as you would have them do
so that when you die
you'll find golden boy peanuts
waiting in the afterlife for you
there are no pan-asain supermakets
down in hell
so you can't buy golden boy peanuts
there are no pan-asain supermakets
down in hell
so you can't buy golden boy peanuts
yeah
if thine enemy oppresses you
you must
let him opress you some more
so that when you go shoping in paradise
you'll find those magnificent peanuts
from singapore
with the drawing of the
young chinese farmer
eastern sun behind him
smiling at you from the shelves
if we want to spend eternaty in happynes
we are going to have to watch ourselves
you must give to the march of dimes
you must be on gaurd against wickednes
at all times
and you will
find that your efforts
have brought you great joy
when your
spirit is munching on that
golden boy
there are no pan-asain supermakets
down in hell
so you can't buy golden boy peanuts
there
but the
streets of heaven are lined with shells
and there's billboards of the golden boy
everywhere
there are no pan-asain supermakets
down in hell
so you can't buy golden boy peanuts
there are no pan-asain supermakets
down in hell
so you can't buy golden boy peanuts
go!
The lyrics to The Mountain Goats' song "Golden Boy" are a satirical take on religion and the idea of leading a good life in order to be rewarded in the afterlife. The song starts off with the plea to "lead a good life" and to treat others with kindness, implying that this will ensure a positive afterlife. The imagery of "golden boy peanuts waiting in the afterlife for you" represents the idea of a reward or prize for living a moral life.
The song continues with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lack of Pan-Asian supermarkets in hell, suggesting that without access to these specific peanuts, the afterlife would be lacking in quality. The repeated phrase of "there are no Pan-Asian supermarkets down in hell" emphasizes the absurdity of the idea.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more abstract, making references to the march of dimes and the need to guard against wickedness. The repeated use of the phrase "golden boy peanuts" serves to tie the lyrics together and emphasizes the satirical nature of the song.
Overall, "Golden Boy" is a playful take on religious morality and the idea of an afterlife reward system. It uses hyperbolic imagery and repetitive phrasing to drive home the absurdity of the concept.

“There are no Golden Boy peanuts left in this world as far as anyone can tell. But if I can just get spiritual with you for a moment, the song says that in hell—hell, the place of eternal suffering and torment, the place where no happiness can be found—that’s the place where no Golden Boy peanuts are. But it’s also been further observed that we now all, you and I, your parents, your friends, your enemies, strangers, all live in a place where there are no such peanuts." -- JD 02.20.2020 Swedish American Music Hall
