Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.

and we wondered about the color of the sky outside
in warsaw in 1939
it was alright just to be alive
it was good that you were mine
and you held your hands up
to form a heart in the air
you held you hands up with your thumbs touching
through the peice missing in the brick wall
we had an excellent view of the soldiers coming down the wall
and you held your hands up where i could see them
in the dark and they formed a heart in the air
you held you hands up
and they formed a heart in the air
i heard the old songs radiating from you
i heard the old songs radiating from you
The lyrics of The Mountain Goats' song "I Corinthians 13:8-10" paint a vivid picture set in Warsaw in 1939. The singer tells a tale of uncertainty and fear, as they hear the rats scurrying in the rafters and contemplate the color of the sky outside. Despite the turbulent times, there is a sense of gratitude for being alive and for the person they are with. The line "it was good that you were mine" reflects the singer's appreciation for their partner's presence during such trying times.
In the midst of chaos, there is a beautiful and poignant moment shared between the singer and their partner. As they look through a missing piece in a brick wall, they witness soldiers approaching. In this fleeting moment, the partner lifts their hands, forming a heart in the air, a symbol of love and unity. Even in the darkness, the hands held up in the shape of a heart signify a brief respite from the harsh reality they find themselves in, a moment of connection amidst the chaos.
The final lines of the song explore the power of music and how it can transcend time and space. The singer hears "the old songs radiating" from their partner, emphasizing the role of music as a source of comfort and strength. These songs, which carry a sense of history and collective memory, serve as a beacon of hope and tradition.
