Transcendental Youth
The Mountain Goats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold through broken baseboards.
I despise this town.
Snow on the sunroof,
Two stories down.
Hold hands,
Wish the snow away.
Rise in the darkness,
Of the gathering day.

Sing.
Sing for ourselves alone.
Speak into,
The microphone.

Cedar smudge our headbands,
And take to the skies.
Soar ever-upwards,
On air gone black with flies.
Shroud ourselves in the cosmos.
Let the music play.
Bright star of the morning,
Shine on his rising way.

Sing.
In the night.
In the nameless dark.
Father long gone,
But we bear his mark.

Learn some secrets,
Never tell.
Stay sick,
Don't get well.

Clutch those broken headboards.
Ride the highest wave.
Dusky diamonds shining in the far depths of the cave.
Try to explain ourselves,
Babble on and on.
By the time you receive this, we'll be gone.

Sing.
Sing high.

While the fire climbs.
Sing one for the old times.

Overall Meaning

The verses of "Transcendental Youth" by The Mountain Goats are marked with vivid and emotional imagery. The opening lines express a deep sense of dissatisfaction with one's surroundings: "Cold through broken baseboards / I despise this town." The singer is overwhelmed by the feeling of isolation and loneliness, as represented by the snow outside and the fact that the singer is two stories above the ground. Yet, despite this, the singer clings onto someone close to them and wishes the snow would go away so that they can welcome the day.

The chorus is a call to action, an urging to sing and speak out for oneself, in the face of everything that tries to bring you down: "Sing. / Sing for ourselves alone. / Speak into, / The microphone." The second half of the song takes on a more spiritual and existential tone. The singer talks about a group of people who smudge their headbands with cedar and rise up into the sky, aiming to reach transcendence. They want to escape their earthly boundaries and become one with the universe. They are not afraid of death, for they feel that their lives hold a much greater significance than the fleeting moments they may have on this earth.

I’m attending a friend’s funeral tomorrow. He just turned 18, we just graduated high school together and his car got wrapped around a tree. I’m not sure exactly what exactly about this song hits home for me, and maybe I’m interpreting it wrong, but I think it’s the nostalgia for youth and getting to worry about small things. Because I’m not an adult by any means but I feel that now. No one will probably read this, but I’m glad I found this song when I did. Keep the people you care about close and never take them for granted. Because someday they won’t be there. Stay safe.

The brass in this song and Cry for Judas is SO GOOD. There needs to be more songs with that brassy swing in the world.

I love JD's songs because they make me feel like it's okay to be fucked up. This is the one off the new album that gives me that feeling the most.

This song makes me think of walking silently through a historic town on a chilly December night as snow slowly flutters towards the ground.

I am in love. Have you ever been in love with someone and think, how is it that the entire world hasn't fallen in love with this person? That's how I feel with this song.

Klisteret I have no clue what our ancestors first sang about, but I suspect it felt like that. Maybe I'm overestimating them, but I think they might recognize some of our horrors.
