Their debut UK single, ‘Last Of Me’, was championed by Graham Norton on his BBC Radio 2, with the TV personality inviting them to appear on his BBC television talk show.
Influenced by 50s and 60s pop/soul and folk, the band have a sound that sits somewhere between The House Martins, The Ronettes and The Beach Boys. Spring-loaded handclaps and irresistible sing-along choruses cradle often bittersweet tales of love, friendship and, ultimately, identity, providing unexpected levels of depth to their rootsy, pop anthems in waiting.
The Musgraves’ 11 song debut album You That Way I This Way is set to release in the US via OK! Good Records on April 16, and could quite possibly be the anti-depressant to the recent surge of bitter-sweet anthems of love and loss from bands like The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, and The Head And The Heart.

Back To Me
The Musgraves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was not baptized
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back
Lost for a long time
Two parallel lines
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back (yeah)
Look at me and don't you lie
I could be your sacrifice
But don't you hold your head up high
For bullshit, I do not have time
I can be an old tattoo
To remind me when I get bad news
That I do not exist to die
But live to die while saving you
Does it bite at your edges?
Do you lie awake restless?
Why am I so obsessive?
Hangin' onto every sentence
This town's the same as you left it
Your page was blank but I read it
I still dial 822-993-167
Oh, there was Heaven in your eyes
I was not baptized
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back
Lost for a long time
Two parallel lines
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back
I'm runnin' out of tears to cry
They're gone before they hit my cheeks
Maybe it's the air out here
Or maybe something's changin' me
If you think that you could wake me up
Then you don't know how well I sleep
You love me and I don't know why
I only call you once a week
Does it bite at your edges?
Do you lie awake restless?
Why are you so obsessive?
Hangin' onto every sentence
This town's the same as I left it
My page is blank but you read it
You still dial 822-993-167
Oh, there was Heaven in your eyes
I was not baptized
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back
Lost for a long time
Two parallel lines
Everything's alright when
She calls me back, she calls me back
When she calls me back
All the pain I should have saved
Oh, I was too afraid of livin' life in your footsteps
In your heart or in your head
Oh, I was too afraid of livin' life in your footsteps
Livin' life in your footsteps
Livin' life in your footsteps
Still she calls me back
Still she calls me
The lyrics to "Back To Me" by The Musgraves seem to express a longing for someone who has had a profound impact on the singer's life. The opening lines suggest that the person being referred to had once brought a sense of joy and comfort to the singer's existence. The mention of not being baptized could symbolize a lack of purity or innocence, highlighting the flawed nature of the singer's existence, but finding solace in the connection with this person. The repetition of the phrase "she calls me back" emphasizes the longing to have that person back in their life, as if their presence brings everything back to a state of harmony.
The second verse reveals a complex dynamic between the singer and this person. The singer portrays themselves as someone willing to make sacrifices for the other, but also makes it clear that they don't have time for shallow behavior or insincerity. The line "I can be an old tattoo, to remind me when I get bad news" suggests that the singer sees themselves as a reminder of the past and the emotional connection they had with this person.
The following verses explore the obsessive thoughts and emotions that the singer experiences in relation to this person. There is a sense of restlessness, as indicated by the questions about biting edges and lying awake. The line "This town's the same as you left it, your page was blank but I read it" hints at the absence of the person, yet their influence is still felt and their presence is imagined. The singer admits to calling a specific phone number, perhaps hoping to reach out to or reconnect with this person.
The chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the longing and desire for this person to come back into the singer's life. The mention of being lost for a long time and two parallel lines suggests that the singer has been drifting, searching for a sense of direction or connection, longing for the reunion that will bring everything back into alignment.
Overall, the lyrics of "Back To Me" convey a mix of longing, nostalgia, and a yearning for a lost connection. The singer finds solace in the memories and desires to rekindle the bond with the person who holds a special place in their heart.
